WE BELONG TOGETHER

Chapter Four.

We get into the director’s office and he motions us to sit on the available seats. George hesitates a little but he sits anyway.

‘’Thank you so much Mrs. Dima for letting me know about this.’’ He says calmly referring to George’s wife and that earns her a very mean glare from George.

My heart leaps with joy just thinking of how this woman has saved my life. She called the director? I am sure she is also very tired of his evil deeds.

She nods at the director and he continues.

‘’Miss Lynn, how did everything start?’’ I cower as I stare at George and think about how everything started.

‘’When I first joined here, he lied to his wife that he had taken me to the hospital and she investigated then found out it was a lie. For the past few months now, George has been threatening me that I would loose my job if I didn’t sleep with him. I felt frustrated but since I have talked to his wife before, we agreed that I record him if he ever did it again and that’s what I did.’’ His glare makes me cower but that can’t shut me down right now. I glare right back.

‘’Well done Lynn, I’m happy you are spilling the beans to the director.’’ That’s my bitchy subconscious. She’s winking all over and I appreciate how supportive she is.

‘’Lynn stop l……’’

‘’Stop talking George, you will speak when I give you time to.’’ The director cuts him politely before he says what he was going to say.

‘’He did it so many times and mostly on Mondays. I recorded him and shared the audio with his wife who has been very cooperative and that’s why she is here today. He tried strangling me one day but he let go. He also threatened that if I ever tell anyone about it he would kill the whole of my family.’’ I say with a shaky voice, my tears find a reason to come out and I let them.

I love my family so much, I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to them especially not because of me, if need be I would do the unthinkable to protect my family.

‘’George, I want to hear your version of the story.’’ He is damn calm and I watch him pace the room since George cannot speak, he tries to defend himself but the director says it’s too late to do that.

‘’I have warned you a number of times, you must always heed to your promises. I told you if I ever heard of it again then you would pay for it.’’ We are looking at each other with his wife, he has been doing this and the director is aware.

‘’So you have been doing this on different occasions?’’  The wife is furious as she asks that but she is feigning strength. I admire her strength.

He is not given a chance to say anything because the director is quite furious with him.

‘’Pack your things and leave for my school is not a place where you cover up your criminal behaviours.’’

‘’You are firing me?’’ He asks creasing his brows and almost yelling.

No! You were fired the moment I realized that you are not fit to lead kids, go and never ever return to this place.

He is full of arrogance, he looks at us from Jane his wife, to me then to the Director then to me again.

‘’You will all pay for this. Especially you Lynn, I will come back for you.’’ He says and his smile is as evil as ever.

I am super scared but the wife is just shaking her head she doesn’t seem to believe that she got married to such an evil man.

He makes to move but his wife’s cold disinterested and bored voice stops him.

‘’You are living my house too. I can’t leave with a serial killer under the same roof. I have tolerated you for way too long.’’ She sounds calm but when I search her eyes, they are filled with tears.

He storms out of the room but the evil grin is still on his face. I ask the director what I should do after him and his wife are out of sight and he says everything will be fine.

I find Vin and we depart. As we are on our way home, we pass by our market centre and the people are looking at me weirdly and murmuring things I can’t hear.

We should be closing by end of this week. We have a new headmaster coming in tomorrow and I hope he doesn’t turn out to be like that idiot George.

What is really his problem? He is surely very disgusting, I wonder how his wife deals with him and he is the most disgusting human being I know.

How much does he love screwing women? Anyway, that guy is creepy, he has such a beautiful wife, I don’t expect him to be doing what he does but that is life.

‘’Lynn!’’ Vin calls me softly snapping her fingers at my face and bringing me back to reality.

I look at her and smile sweetly.

‘’Are you ok. I have been calling your name like five times.’’

‘’I’m good Vin.’’ I lie because seriously speaking I am not good at all, I would have been good if that fool was taken away to a penitentiary or something.

‘’You look worried.’’ She notes and I nod

‘’I am worried that George will hurt me. He threatened us and I feel like his threats aren’t empty.’’

‘’Relax cousin, George will never lift a finger on you. He is such a toothless dog because please trust me he would have done the worst if anything. He is a fool and that’s the bottom line.’’ She says and trust Vin to always want to make me feel good even in such a situation.

‘’Okay, thank you so much for your support you have made things easier for me. If not for your courage, I would not have managed to pull out of it. Thanks really cousin.’’ I feel really better and relieved after hearing her saying those words.

We get home and go fetching water, later on we’re engrossed in marking the exams and preparing report cards.

Friday is here. We are not supposed to go to work early because we should be closing schools today. Vin is on my case though, she wakes me up as early as usual.

‘’The new head master is a no nonsense man, he won’t tolerate you getting to school late.’’ She says and I lift a brow.

‘’Its closing day Vin. Please don’t do this to me.’’ I say calmly and she laughs heartily.

Wake up Lynn, you know I am going to the city tomorrow.’’ It’s more of a statement but I nod.

‘’Say hi to Job for me. I will miss you cousin.’’ I say quietly and she shakes her head.

‘’You will not.’’

‘’Why’s that? ‘’

‘’You are coming with me. Job said that he has gotten a house for us and an academy, I can never leave you behind. Not after what George thought of doing to you.’’ She says and my heart races, I have mixed feeling about this.

Also please remember our agreement.

‘We walk together to the end.’

Leaving my family behind sounds strange and weird to me.

‘’Vin will mum agree to this?’’ I ask concern covering my face.

‘’She should. We are headed there to look for ways of changing their lives as well as ours. We will talk about it later now get up and let’s go to work. We cannot afford to be late.

The day goes smoothly after closing, we go back home and take care of our house chores.

We are at the table in the evening when Vin starts the story.

‘’Attention everyone I want to make a request.’’ She calls and we all turn to look at her.

What it is Vin?’’ Dad asks

‘’I am going to see my husband to be in the city, I would like Lynn to come with me.’’

‘’Come with you? No, Lynn is not going anywhere.’’ That’s mum, I don’t know why she has reacted that way but we can keep trying. We all know that I have never been her favourite but the way she is throwing tantrums shows that she has an agenda.

‘’It will not be for long aunt, please let Lynn go with me for a few days she will come back.’’ My dad is always very quiet, he doesn’t say much but he acts more.

‘’I said no! She isn’t leaving.’’ She says as a matter of finality.

‘’Guys I am here, and I am an adult. Don’t I have a say in this?’’

‘’Who told you that adults seize to be their parents kids? Mum is on it again.

My dad clears his voice awkwardly and that reminds us that he is there and is the head of the house.

‘’Mama Lynn just let her go. She is old enough to decide what’s best for her. Going to the city and coming back shouldn’t be such a big deal ‘’ He says and my mum who isn’t obviously happy with the statement stands and walks out on us. She stops before going far and turns to look at us.

‘’Do whatever helps you sleep.’’ What’s the problem with her really?

She doesn’t know about this but I should go away to clear my head from all the threats I got from George and the frustrations that came with it.

I thought I was weak, vulnerable and dependant but I have realized that I am actually super strong, if I sorted this just with Vin and without telling dad, I know what I am capable of.

I have my dad’s permission so I will go to the city. I would have loved mum’s blessings too but you can never force them out, one should be able to pronounce them freely.

Everyone is sad as we move to our sleeping area, we are doing a few packing here and there and my little sister is so sad.

‘’Yin,’’ she doesn’t know how to pronounce Lynn so she says ‘yin’ ‘’Will you come back for me?’’ She asks and I feel tears welling in my eyes.

I love this little girl, she is so adorable, beautiful and she is going to be an intelligent girl in future.

A stray tear falls off my eye and another one follows immediately. I don’t want baby Lexie to see my tears so I wipe them very fast using the back of my hand and move to hold her.

‘’I will come back for you sweetheart. I will always remember you darling.’’ I tell her calmly feigning a smile.

She is smiling and her smile is the most genuine and very beautiful, it’s not faked like mine and that’s always. The best thing about kids. They are always sweet, genuine and everything about them is adorable.

‘’Penkyu’’  That’s her beautiful way of saying thank you so I always laugh it off without showing her that I am actually laughing at her.

‘’Can you go to sleep Lynn! I will wake you up at four.’’ She says and I shrug.

I lift the beautiful princess and take her to our mattress, I am sure I will wake up cold due to being urinated on all over by Lexie but I couldn’t care less. She is still young so wetting her bedding happens regularly. I want her to sleep next to me. I want her lovely, beautiful and sweet smile to be the one in my mind tonight.

The following day we wake up at four. I turned on my mattress until I eventually fell asleep which wasn’t for long as I was so tired 

I was and I am still very anxious about travelling to the city. I hope all goes well for me.

After the preparations we move to dad’s house he prays for us, mum is also awake so I appreciate when I see her join us in prayers.

Parents are the best people on earth. You might think that your parent hate you. That might not be the case instead, they always mean well and wishes us the best.

We hug everyone goodbye except Lexie.

I am happy she isn’t awake because I would be heartbroken thinking of how her beautiful glowing eyes would look at me as I leave.

The journey to the city begins.
