I gripped the sword and unsheathed it, hearing the shiiink of metal against leather. I heard a low, terrifying growl from the forest. The girl whimpered and buried her head in my cloak. "It's all gonna be ok." She shook her head and tears flowed down her cheeks, "No it's not!" I let out a small laugh and ruffled her hair, "Watch this, and don't move." I lightly shoved her behind me, walking towards where I thought I was hearing the noise.
"Try me!" I yelled, a giant black bear like creature jumped out in front of me and I stabbed it in the eye. It let out a blood curdling scream and charged. I slashed it's arm and it dissolved into sand in front of me. I jerked back once the sand appeared and laughed, I can't believe I just did that!
The girl ran up to me and hugged me, her face reuniting with my cloak. I started getting all these flashbacks. Flashbacks of me and this girl, I kept calling her Penelope. From what I saw, she was my sister. I had a jerk of a dad and something was trying to get us... my thoughts went to the creature I had just killed.
"I know why were here." The girl looked at me, lips pursed, eyes full of wonder. "Getting away from someone, or something." I saw the wonder turn into fear, I hugged her tightly and whispered, "I will never let anything hurt you. Never." I felt her tighten her grip and then let go rather quickly. I smiled reassuringly at her, at least I hope I did, and headed into the unknown ahead of us.
We had been looking for about 2 hours before I heard something behind us. I grabbed her and threw her up a tree, she was extremely light, and squirmed up. A cyclops pushed through the trees and bushes and Penelope was about to scream, I put my hand to her mouth and held it shut. She was scared.
I put one finger to my lips and she slowly nodded, I smiled at her and notched a arrow to my bow. I aimed slowly, then the cyclops sniffed the air and looked straight into my eyes. I resisted the urge to scream, who knows how many friends he has out there, and shot him straight in the heart. Dead on the spot.
I looked around before I jumped out of the tree and held my hands out to catch Penelope, "Just jump, I promise I won't drop you." She hesitated, then jumped. I caught her in my arms and set her on the ground. She laughed and grinned at me, a small sparkle in her eyes. For a moment I forgot about the problems we had at the moment, until I heard a roar shaking the trees, sending birds flying away.
"Brace yourself." I whispered to the small child, I looked around, spinning in a slow circle, aiming the bow with an arrow already notched to the bow. "Coast is clear, let's hurry." I grabbed her hand and slung my bow over my shoulder while I ran into the direction we were originally heading. "Keep you eyes-" Another bear like creature jumped in front of us, blocking our path.
I reached for my bow, while shoving Penelope out of the monster's peripheral vision. His eyes were on me, and I had to act fast. The monster shoved me to the ground in a matter of seconds and I heard Penelope slap her hand to her mouth. I resisted the urge to cry, it will show weakness, something this beast might be trained to sense.
I did something that surprised the monster and the girl, I whistled. Five high pitched notes, then laughed. A small, cheerful laugh. The monster hesitated, but I didn't. I unsheathed my sword in a split second and sliced him in half, not seeing blood, just sand. He erupted into sand and I laugh again.
"Guess I found a new tactic."
We had been traveling for about 5 more hours before we smelt something odd, "Is that..." I watched Penelope sniff the air, "The sea?" I nodded and smiled, a smile that didn't reach my eyes, "Guess something might get easier?" We both nodded and continued our path, none of it made sense, but to me it did, and I sensed it did to her to.
I heard shouts, 1 male 1 female. "Dad!" The female one said, the male groaned and yelled, "I forbid it! They can find their own way." I heard the girl scream in frustration and the boy said in a softer voice, "They are daughter's of Hades, I cannot allow it." I heard a shuffle of sand as the girl said, "The daughter's of your brother, shouldn't you strongly allow it?"
Penelope hugged me as we reached closer to the scene, we could see a little through the patches of bushes and trees. The girl had long black hair to her knees, and I could see from there, she had piercing green eyes. Like the sea. She wore a black ribbon-belt around her waist and a blue dress that cut up to her knees in the front and swept the ground slightly in the back. Flowy and beautiful.
"They might die!" She screamed, her dad wore a really tacky blue Hawaiian shirt with flowers on them. I wanted to take out my bow and shoot him until I ran out of arrows, then run over there and rip the shirt to shreds with my bare hands. It was so freaking hideous. And he wore jeans, which looked so normal compared to the strong aura he was giving off to me.
"I forbid it, end of discussion." The girl grabbed his arm and yelled, "You will kill them!" He slowly shook his head, "You just don't know who their mother is." With that he disappeared, into thin air. The girl just stared at where her father once stood, a shocked face glued onto her. Something about the last thing he said got to her, and it was freaking me out.
"Hello?" I called to her softly, she looked around, confused until I walked out of the woods tugging my terrified sister behind me. "I'm Shadow, and this is Penelope, who are you?" I said kindly, once we got to her I put my hand out for her to shake. She stared at me with somewhat awe and I tilted my head, she saw the gesture and I almost saw the gears churning in her head as she tried to push away the thought, barely ending successfully.
"Is it ok... if I ask what that was about?" She nodded, "Oh it's fine, you're gonna know soon enough." I smiled at her as she continued, "About your dad, and you leaving your cabin. No clue who your mom is though... Anyways, good thing is you two are alive. Now, your dad is Hades, from what I know your dad didn't want you and gave you to one of her friends." Penelope held my hand tightly, like she would never let go.
"We need to get you to camp as soon as possible." I laughed softly, "You still haven't answered my question." She grinned and rubbed the back of her neck, "I'm Oceanna, and that guy you saw was my dad, Poseidon."
