MY WALKING pace increased and the more closer I got the more clearer his words began to seem.

My mind was a whirlpool of emotions, my breath was shallow and a lump began to form in my throat. I couldn't will my lips to move. Amidst all of this, I opened my mouth and questioned, my voice low,

"How is he?"

The doctor wiped a bead of sweat that ran down the side of his face as he looked at me with sympathy evident in his eyes. He took a fleeting glance at the file in his hand as if he wanted to confirm the news he was going to announce to me.

"I'm sorry for your loss, Valerie."

Words left me. The world turned into a blur and so did all the sounds. The choking smell of the hospital. Everything was just gone.

I paused trying to hold back the strange feelings rumbling inside me, but I couldn't. A lone tear escaped my eye and just like that, the floodgates opened. So many tears burst forth like water from a dam, spilling down my face. I breathed heavier than I ever had before, I was gasping for air that simply wasn't there.

My throat burned forming a silent scream and before I knew it I fell to the ground with one hand on my heart and the other clutching the recorder.

It's over.
