The awkward silence on the ride to the new house was worse than when they had first entered the van and it remained that way until Rosa finally spoke up as they were pulling into the driveway.
"We know how overwhelming it can all be. New house, new faces," Rosa said. "All in your face," Victor added. "Just, take it at your own speed."
The van came to a stop and Billy glanced over at his sister who was still obviously upset at him for being rude. Billy sighed and quickly got out of the car before going to open the door for Riley. She hesitated, her eyes flickering over to meet his. He only offered her a small smile and Riley sighed before smiling back, the fight long behind them.
Riley got out of the van and grabbed onto her backpack before locking arms with her brother and hurrying after Rosa and Victor. It looked like a nice house from the outside and Riley could've sworn she saw a figure of a person looking down at them from out one of the upstairs windows, but it had disappeared as soon as she looked up.
Rosa opened the front door and smiled before calling out, "Hello?" She took her coat off and threw her purse on a bench. The twins hesitantly walked in more and looked around. It was obvious this was a warm and loving home and the feeling Riley got from just walking around it made her already feel better than she had in a really long time.
The radio was playing and she could faintly hear the familiar lyrics of the song 'Feels' drifting through the air. Rosa looked around confused before saying, "We're home."
"That's what happens when you suck!"
Riley and Billy's eyes widened and the two quickly spun around to see a young Asian boy sitting on a couch with a computer screen in front of him and a headset on his head.
He typed furiously on his computer and Victor let out a sigh before muttering, "So much for a welcome party." "Yeah, that thing growing out of the couch would be Eugene," Rosa told the twins.
"Is this them?" a little African American girl asked as she came into the room. Big round eyes stared at them from behind her glasses and she smiled before yelling, "Oh my gosh! Billy! Riley!"
She ran towards the two while Victor said, "Woah. Slow down! Slow down!" The little girl didn't listen and instead continued running over to the two before instantly wrapping her arms around them.
The Batson twins looked to each other with wide eyes before looking back down at this girl that they didn't know. "Welcome home!" She squealed as she hugged them tight.
"And that's Darla," Rosa told them. The little girl looked up and gave them a small smile. "I'm Darla," she introduced herself. "Big hugger," Victor said. "I noticed," Billy muttered.
