Today is my birthday, and who am I celebrating it with? No one. My intermediate family is dead from a drunk driver, and my other family members were either too old, or just didn't want me. My mom, dad, brother, and I were always the odd ones out. We were always taking advantage of our niceness. They gave us nothing in return, or purposely offered us help at the worse times possible. So, that's how I ended up here. That's the only thing that changed, really. I'm still the odd one out here, only the first person asked if they need help on a project. Other than that, no one really acts like I exist. You get used to it after a while, doesn't become so bothersome.
My introductory thoughts were interrupted by a knock coming outside the door. I get off my bed and open the door, only to see Brittany. You see, Brittany and I haven't always been how you say, friendly. She hates me, unless she needs help with something, like most people. "Hey, someone's coming to adopt in 10 minutes. I was supposed to tell you yesterday but I forgot." She leaves and closes the door behind her. Someone's coming to adopt in 10 minutes, and she's not telling me till now? Wow, she's such a nice person.
I go to my closet and get my "If You Can't Be A Unicorn, Be A Mermaid." Shirt. It took me two months to save up for that shirt. Doing extra chores for a month, and then doing yard work for the neighbors from behind. Come to think of it, how come none of them have come to adopt?
I take a pair of skinny jeans, and red converse along with the shirt, and start to change in the bathroom. "Children from the age of 10-15 please come down to the adoption room." Ms. Frost calls over the loud speaker. I grab the jacket one of the old workers, Sandra, got me for my 12th birthday, and hurry downstairs. There's about 10 kids down there, and I take my place in between Jean and Marco. Ms. Frost enters the hallway. "This is a group of four men that are coming to adopt, if you're uncomfortable with this, you may leave." Around five girls get up to leave, one of them Brittany. Why would they leave when they have a chance to get adopted?
Ms. Frost calls Paige into the room, leaving the rest of us in hallway. I sit there in silence as the minutes turns to hours. I start to play with my hands and think. Who could be adopting? Will they like me? My nerves are starting to get the best of me, and I start to breathe heavier. "Relax, Amber, you'll be fine." I look up to see Ms. Frost smiling at me. "You're up in a couple of minutes." I smile and nod. Apparently I was zoned out longer than I thought.
A few minutes later, Alex comes out of the room and I take his place. I walk in with my head down, and take a seat on the chair. "Hello." One of them says to me, his voice sounds so familiar. "Hi." My head is still down, I'm not very good with new people. "What's your name?" a new voice appears, again, with a familiar sound. "Amber." My responses were short and quiet. Why try when they're most likely not going to pick me. Most of the people adopt the pretty and popular girls, so why bother.
"Mind if we ask you some questions?" I nod at yet another different voice. "Do you like music?" I love music, especially Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco. I love a lot of other bands too, but those two are my favorite. "Yes. I especially like Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco." There was silence for a moment. "We like them too." A small smile goes across my face.
"So, any hobbies?" the other man asks. "I like to write, pretend I can sing, and I like school. If that counts as a hobby." I hear one of them chuckle.
"Amber, can we please see what you look like?" I was debating on whether or not to let them see my face. I'M afraid I might scar them with my ugliness. Eventually, I decide to give it a shot, and I couldn't believe who was in front of me. In front of me was the legendary Fall Out Boy. "Um...hi." Andy chuckles a bit. "Hi." He smiles at me. I can't believe what I'm seeing.
"So, Amber, how would you feel about being adopted today?" Patrick asks me. Is he serious? They really wanted to adopt me. And it's on my birthday! This day has just got a lot more awesome. "Really?" my eyes were still widened with shock. "Yes really." Pete reassures. "Go upstairs and pack your stuff. We'll take care of the rest." I agree and dash upstairs. I grab my backpack and shove my five shirts, and three jeans in there. I put on my favorite hat, Domo, and put it on. I take my stuff bear that I had since I was little and gently place it on top. Well, that's everything.
I take one last look at the room. The twin bed shoved in the corner, the pale green walls, and a small desk shoved in the opposite corner. I take a deep breath and let it sink in. I start to make my way downstairs, and bump into Brittany. "Where are you going." She sounds rather annoyed. "The people that came this morning adopted me." Her face became red, and you could feel the heat of the sun beating on her face. "If I didn't leave I bet you wouldn't have gotten adopted! This is all your fault!" she yelled. She kicked my shin and stormed off.
I suck it up, put on a smile, and continue my way downstairs. I poke Joe's shoulder because he's the closest to the stair case, and smile. "You ready to go kid?" The others turn around and we start heading towards the door together. We climb into a SUV parked out front.
Well this is it. I thought to myself. New life, here I come.
