Scenario: A cute (maybe sad) thing Goku does on the morning of the Cell Games.
She tried to ignore the burning in her stomach as well as its anxious twists and turns. Out of all the drama these past few months, even years, Chichi couldn't recall a time where she felt so damn nervous. It almost sickened her to wake up and see the sun shining, skies blue, trees just glowing with green, only to be reminded that blood would be shed. It didn't help that the monster had purposely named his pathetic display the Cell Games.
Gohan's life is no game. The woman though bitterly as she shifted around and prepared to get up from bed. Amidst her writhing, her eyes caught site of the man, his eyes sealed shut, bright sunlight making him appear more angelic. He was becoming so used to the super saiyan form that he had even conquered it in his sleep. Neither is Goku's. How dare that stupid bastard insult us like this. She tore the sheets away from her body and sat on the edge of the bed. The cold wood floors sent a wave of anxiousness through her. As of now, despite having her son and husband close by, she couldn't help but feel horribly alone. Something separated her from everything else and perhaps it was her own worry clouding all that was supposed to be sentimental. No use in feelin' like crap all morning. I haveta give my boys a good breakfast. But no matter how hard she tried, Chichi couldn't mask the anxiety she felt. The minute her butt lifted from the bed, she felt a strong hand clasp her wrist.
"You okay?" The grogginess in his voice brought a small amount of relief for who knew what reason.
"I'm fine, I'm just gunna-"
"C'mere," he eagerly tugged at her arm, "come back to bed." The woman was hypnotized by his voice; its rough tone contrasted with the sweetness of his words, making her feel like she had to obey. Wordlessly, she sat herself back down and almost anticipated the next command. "Tsk. C'mon, lay down." A smile could be heard on his lips this time. So like clockwork, Chichi reversed her routine and winded up back in bed, back in Goku's arms.
"Honey," she whispered tenderly. Afraid, she'd wake up their child. "What're yo-"
"Shhh," those burly arms, so strong and well trained wrapped around her waist like a snake. "Just...let me hold you." He adjusted his position to make her more comfortable. His lips rested against her shoulder blade, eyes remained trained on the steady rising and falling of her chest. Skilled fingertips drew circles across her arm, making her skin tickle with goosebumps. It wasn't very common for him to be so quiet while they embraced. It was also unusual for her to be so ridged. "Calm down." He whispered lovingly, the sleepiness in his voice now fully replaced. "You're gunna be okay." Yet the tension remained glued to her skin and it was painfully obvious. There were words she wanted to say, the heaviness in the air told the warrior so. "Tell me what's on your mind, hm?" He pressed his lips against her shoulder, allowing her some time to reflect on the question. Maybe she ain't afraid of the question. "Chichi look," he held his breath for a minute, collecting the super saiyan energy within him before forcing it out like a candle. "You can tell me." Now her body relaxed significantly, but not totally. No matter how much she said she was used to blonde hair, it would never be as comforting as black. There was just something about seeing him look so unguarded and natural that brought her serenity.
"Maybe I will be fine...maybe I am right now. But what about you?" She squeezed his arm tight, almost begging for him to listen, to understand. "I know you'd protect Gohan and me with your life but, who's gunna protect you?" Her chest felt so heavy, even after confessing.
Now it was his turn to think. For the majority of his life it was just him. Him to hunt his own food, to keep his grandfather's small house tidy, then when he died it was up to him to train himself, further his body and raise the stakes. Of course he had a few other teachers along the way but in the end it was always up to Son Goku to find the strength and improve. "Me, of course." He half smiled while Chichi merely sighed. "Chichi, I can take care of myself y'know."
"Psht. No ya can't." She pouted. With Goku being so stubborn she wondered why she brought this up.
"Well, that's why Piccolo, and Krilin, Gohan, Tien, Vegeta and the rest of 'em will be there in case."
"Oh please, they aren't nearly as strong as you. Vegeta maybe, but he's a loose canon..probably throw you at cell first."
"That's fine by me." Goku chuckled only for Chichi to shoot him a nasty glare. "Yikes, I mean y-yeah that'd be awful."
"Oh sweetheart, you're a terrible liar." She rolled her dark eyes in disdain.
"Aw c'mon, it'll be okay. As long as you 'nd Gohan and all our friends survive I don't care what happens to me." For the first time this morning, she felt jolted. Quickly, and with an aggression Goku was used to seeing, she rolled over and faced her husband.
Slender hands sandwiched sharp jawline and boyish cheeks. "Why don'tcha care about yourself?" The ex-martial artist may have retired the sport long ago but underneath it all she was still a fighter. She squeezed him, hard. "I don't want things to be just "okay" Goku-sa." Her throat felt ready to close up but she pushed through. "I want to live my life with you. That would make everything great, not just okay."
"I understand," he replied matter-of-factly, "but my priority is still to keep you safe. I know you want me here, 'nd that's real sweet but, if me dyin' keeps you two alive that's what I'm gunna do."
"But I won't be happy if-"
"Hun, you have Gohan 'nd all our friends to keep you company."
"But I-" the words he spoke were so genuine yet painful. There was just something strange about this. It was as if he were okay with giving up on life. "Won't you miss us?" Tears stung her eyes and she cursed them while they pulled at Goku's heart.
"Chichi, c'mon." He squeezed her cheek in an attempt to crack a smile. "Of course I'll miss you all. Look, I'll just be happy knowing you all get to live, alright?" Suddenly, all gentleness exited his expression, his voice dropped to a whisper. "I"d sacrifice anything to keep you guys alive. Please," shyness crept into his being, making Chichi's heart twitch. "Please understand I'd never intentionally hurt you or Gohan. I just want what's best."
Cryptic yet heartfelt would be how Chichi would describe this whole thing. She was left with several questions. "Why does it sound like you have something up your sle--" but the pair was interrupted by a child's yawn; a noise that meant Gohan was now awake. Before the woman had any time to process, the man grabbed the back of her neck and brought her closer before pressing his lips onto her forehead.
Then as if no conversation transpired between the two, Goku switched to Dad Mode and began to tease his boy around. "You ready for today, kid? You ain't gonna chicken out on me right?" His bigger arms encircled the child, hugging as well as restraining him. The older Saiyan rocked him around a bit and enjoyed listening to the child's laughter.
"Why aren't you in Super Saiyan?" The tween spoke in between breaths.
Chichi stood quietly, ready to intervene, but soon found it unnecessary. "Well, y'see...your mom don't take me seriously with blonde hair so I had to switch back for a sec. Right sweetheart?"
The nickname was code for "don't worry" and the ex-princess found it difficult not to. "Yes, that's right." She faked a laugh as she watched Goku switch back into blonde. "Now, don't you two have some horsing around to do outside while I get ready?" She smiled again, this time honestly.
"Yup! Me and Gohan got plenty t'do today." He looped an arm around the boy's waist and carried him out like a piece of lumber. Laughter, fresh and innocent filled the house and Chichi, for a moment, felt truly at peace. Maybe things will be okay afterall. I'm just overthinking things...I hope. Her brain went back to his words; "I'd sacrifice anything..." "...never intentionally hurt..." "..whatever is best." It gave her an eerie feeling but she forced the idea out. Goku please. Don't be foolish, don't do what I think you'll do. She clenched her heart, suddenly feeling very alone. Suddenly feeling the urge to just break down and cry. But being a mother, Chichi didn't qualify for the right. Everything will be okay. She forced the words over and over until they brought some semblance of comfort. Everything will be okay.
