I reach the clearing just in time to see Janet's brother trip over a twig. A snort escapes me before I remember yesterday. The pathway is green and mossy, birds sing in their nests and squirrels hurry about, gathering food.
"Thalia!"Janet screams before pulling me into a bear hug. "Where did you go?! We were searching for ages!"
"I went down to this river in the forest and found this," I hold up the diamond for her to see. She frowns at it and takes it slowly from my grip. Her eyes widen before she turns towards the cliff and throws it over. I scream at her but before it falls, a pair of hands catch it and start examining it. "Janet's brother" looks at it carefully.
"The destiny diamond," he mutters, then he looks at me "where did you find this?" I can't meet his eyes so I stare into the distance behind him.
"It was at the bottom of a lake." Luke and Janet glance at each other, their looks confirm something and it annoys me greatly.
"What?" I say "what is it?!" They ignore me and talk quietly.
"Why were you throwing this off the cliff?" Luke mutters. Janet goes red.
"Because it's dangerous! You know that!" She protests, but Luke narrows his eyes.
"We need to keep this with us." He puts it in his pocket and turns to me as Janet walks off.
"Well done Thalia, this is gonna be useful." Then he checks behind him and comes in close.
"And...um. I'm uh, sorry about...you know, last night," he seems really anxious, which isn't like him. "If you don't wanna.-it's ok that- I get that you don't..." He sighs. "Friends," he says, then leaves me sadly standing on the hill.
Notice I've started calling him Luke again.
