Janet checks over her shoulder more often now, like she has a sense of urgency. She is also snapping at Luke and me continuously. I catch a puzzled glance from Luke before we quickly look away. It isn't awkward anymore, not really.
I have no idea where we're heading, but Janet seems to be following a path into the heart of the city, which seems like an ok idea. It's busy and crowded. But people don't look at us twice, which makes a change from trying to kill us. It's odd that everybody seems to be in their own little world, oblivious to anyone around them and how easily they will shove someone out of the way because of their own importance.
"He lives around here," Janet says, turning back to face us. Luke nods and I stare into the distance. She narrows her eyes at me.
"What? Don't you trust me or something?!" She snaps, her nostrils flaring. I jump.
"No! Of course I trust you!" I glance at Luke, who is frowning. "Why wouldn't I?" Her shoulders tense.
"There is no reason. So just get off my case, ok?!" She turns and speed walks ahead. It appears that Janet is also in her own little world too.
She leads us to an estate of dodgy looking flats, infested with mould and grime. The smell wafts about like the stench of vomit and people wearing black hoodies swan about, carrying handfuls of I'm going to pretend is "flour". We climb flights of stairs, before Janet starts pressing her ear against the doors.
"This one?" She mutters unsurely. Luke shrugs.
"Go for it." Her knock is gentle and light, but the door opens with a certain ferocity. Over the threshold stands a women with her skin stretched over her bony face like wax. Her eyes have a dead look to them and her hair is tied into a greasy bun. Her expression looks slightly haunted as she gawps at us.
"What you want?" Janet steps back a bit.
"Oh, um. Hello...we were wondering, does Mr Buckley live here?" Her voice sounds small and scared. The women wipes her nose with the back of her hand and shakes her head.
"Nah. But don't go knocking on everyone's door will ya. Not everyone's as pretty as me." Her laugh resembles a witches cackle, before she slams the door in our faces.
"Great." Says Janet. "What a waste of time."
"Well, we could wait until he comes out?" I suggest, but Luke shakes his head.
"We don't know how long until he comes out, and to be truly honest, I don't want to wait around here for too long." He says, quickly taking his hand off the rail and frowning at the contents. Half of me agrees, but half of me tells me to keep searching.
"So...now what?" I ask, knowing that I'm not going the like answer.
