Danny is always in low spirits. He's attempted suicide three times and has come to the conclusion that even death hates him. Basically he's just tiredly enduring life.
Judy, his neighbor is always smiling and he can't help but think it's fake, no one smiles that much for no reason. He doesn't like fake.
However, when his mother takes a short trip and he spends some time with the neighbours he finds that deductions are just deductions until proven as fact and is made to "understand the basis and intricacies of 'the simple smile'".
