- Dawood's PoV
So our engagement was in 2 weeks time. It would be small, with minimal guests so we could enjoy it properly. Then a month later it would be our nikaah. That would be held in the masjid, then we'd transfer to a hall where the guests would eat and Sumaiya and I would spend our first few hours as husband and wife (Islamically). From then on, we'd be able to speak to each other and go out together without the supervision of a family member. Three months later we'd have our wedding ceremony and 'rukhsati' – a south Asian tradition where the bride bids farewell to her family. That would be our first night together, before the last day of wedding celebrations: the walima. That's a feast whereby our families and friends can celebrate our union.
That is one hell of a lot of celebrations. Not even mentioning Sumaiya's 'mendhi' – which I wouldn't be attending, it was a girls only event, and the countless get togethers that the fmailies would hold before the official days. The planning was going to be hectic, because not only do we both have pretty big families, but our families have reputations that these ceremonies had to reflect.
Although I wasn't the most creative person, I wanted to be involved in the planning process, and help Sumaiya out wherever I could.
- Sumaiya's PoV
My engagement to Dawood is in two weeks. That means I have two weeks to pick an outfit for me, my sisters, mum and best friend. We had already decided that my dad, Yahya and Sulaiman would be wearing simple thobes on the engagement, nikaah and walima and a suit on the wedding day, so I didn't really need to worry about them. Thankfully, the event was being held at Dawood's place, the Ali household, in a marquee in their garden, and they would be taking care of the catering us girls would be taking care of decorations and the boys would be finding a suitable photographer to take care of all the days of our wedding.
Aside from all that though, today we were going shopping. We'd come to a boutique to find something for me to wear to my engagement, and after looking through rails of embellished gowns, flowing dresses and lacy pieces, I decided to go for something simple. I picked out a lilac dress that had a very small train, just enough to float simply behind me. For my sisters, I picked black abayas with the same lilac embroidery lacing on the shoulders and sleeve, whilst for mama I chose a similar piece which included hints of silver. The men of my family would be wearing grey coloured thobes. The rest of the week I would be busy at work, so I was glad that outfits had been sorted in just one day. Now all I needed to do was inform my friends of the news as my cousins and the rest of my family had been alerted by mama and baba.
And there you have chapter 5!
I've come to realise that you guys might be finding the story a little dry so far, but not to worry! I do have a storyline up my sleeve but first we need Sumaiya and Dawood to get married! Eek! Who else is excited? Well, now we know what the plans are for the celebrations, what do you all think?
Let me know in the comments below, I have no idea what my readers think so far :(
