To say she looked beautiful was an understatement. Even whilst greeting her family, I couldn't take my eyes off her. Her brother passed her over to me (which was only allowed because we weren't alone, all the guests were here too), and as she looked up at me, she smiled so joyfully that I immediately returned the gesture.
"Assalamu alaykum." I began.
"Wa alaykum salaam. How are you?" she responded, surprising me a little because its usually me who begins the initial conversation, but alhamsulillah that's a good sign – it just means she's getting more comfortable around me.
"Alhamdulillah, I'm very well. What do you think of the set up? Sulaiman and Yahya said you put a lot of effort into the decorations. They look amazing! I never knew you were so talented! I have to say I was very impressed when I saw them" I complemented her, genuinely.
"It's all so beautiful, I never imagined it to be anything like this at all. You've definitely done it all justice." She said with a smile in her eyes that made her glow.
"Assalamu alaykum everyone. As you all know we are here today to celebrate the engagement of Sumaiya and Dawood. So if the lovely couple to be come forward and everyone takes a seat, I'd like to request for Ibraheem, the groom's brother in law, to grace us allwith the recitation of the beautiful words of the opening of the holy Quran, surah al Fatiha."
As my brother in lawrecited and the guests all listened attentively, I glanced at Sumaiya, spotting her eyes brim with tears, and, panicking, I started searching in my pocket for a tissue. Ibraheem finished with the prayer as everyone called "Aameen" before he ended with the words 'verily Allah has spoken the truth'.
"Hey, you okay?" I asked, worried and concerned. Did she not want to be here?
"Yeah, yeah I'm fine. It's just, that was such a beautiful way to begin all of this, you know, to start our journey together."
I smiled, content with her response, "it is, now let's go meet our guests!"
About an hour later, we'd been round to greet all the guests and catch up with everyone who had travelled to attend the function. I just wished, deep down, that all my family could have been here.
Now the time had come to give Sumaiya her gift. I'd brought her a ring, but not an actual engagement or wedding ring; it was more of a promise ring. The real thing would be gifted to her on our nikaah in a month. This was a dainty gold band embellished with a beautiful pink stone and lots of tiny, delicate diamonds. It was simple, yet very unique – it had been made specially for her, after all. I intended to spoil my future wife as much as possible.
"Jazakallahu khair, its gorgeous. But you didn't have to, I wasn't expecting anything like this!" she stammered, dazzled by the gift.
"Shh, you're very welcome, but I want you to understand why I got it. It's a symbol that whatever happens from this day forth, for the rest of my life I will do whatever is in my power to protect tyou, and love you, and make you happier than you ever thought you could be."
She nodded gratefully, tears in her eyes, lost for words,
"Dawood, please! I am really sorry and I honestly don't want to be disturbing you right now, but its Huzaifa, he's getting restless, nobody can get him to stop crying. Can you try and settle him, I need to go and help mum and dad." Seema trailed, exhausted. She should be enjoying herself, I thought, not worrying.
"Of course I will, bring him over" I looked at Sumaiya to see if that was okay with her, and she nodded, amused.
"Here you go, he's all yours. I am really sorry to have to make you do this, but I know hes always fine when he's with you. Sumaiya, you haven't met my son yet, he's been unwell recently, that's why he's so cranky. I'd tell you all about him, but my parents are waiting for my help and so are our grandparents, I'm sure my brother here will tell you all there is to know"
"Oh hand the poor kid over. Salaam my favourite nephew..."
"Your only nephew-"
"- still my favourite!" Seema laughed, scuttling off to find my mum. "Hey Huzy, sshhh don't cry kiddo. Dawood mamu is here." I whispered, rocking him gently.
"Awww MashaAllah he's adorable!" cooed Sumaiya from beside me.
"Here, you want to take him?" I asked, holding him in her direction. I watched as she scooped up my five month old nephew and somehow managed to get him to stop whimpering within seconds. She looked so happy as she cradled the child, and I just imagined what she'd look cradling our own –
"Hey bro, are you picturing your own kids there?"
"Ugh, Junaid! I've just about gotten engaged, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves."
A couple of moments later, Sulaiman and Yahya were heading my way.
"How's it going with my little sister?" asked Yahya.
"Hey, go easy on him." Sulaiman laughed. These were two overprotective guys, one brother and one brother in law..
"Alhamdulillah", I laughed.
"That's good, but I'm afraid I've come to let you know that your evening is coming to an end. Our parents our waiting for us all at the front of the house" he smiles as I nodded at him and led Sumaiya to the gathering away from the celebrations.
We bid farewell to each member of both families, and the countdown officially began to our nikaah. One event down, 4 left to go!
How did you find that?! Let me know in the comments section below, it would mean so much to me. Vote if you enjoyed x
