Chapter 8: Lurking From The Shadows
---------------
It was midday, following the night they had, and the teens were spread throughout the Academy. For once, they didn't have their usual training sessions, so their father left them alone. Grace came only when meals were ready and Pogo did whatever he did on such a day.
Vanya was about to go to the music room to play her violin when somebody knocked on the front door. She peered around the corner to find that was the only one near the front door. Sighing, she walked towards the door and swung it open, only to see a big, friendly-looking man stand before her.
"Hello, can I help you with something?" she asked.
"Uhm..." He looked over her shoulder, seeming to search for something or rather someone. "Is Five here?" Vanya narrowed her eyes and examined the unknown person.
"Who are you?"
"I really need to talk to Five." He smiled at her. She feigned a smile back. She didn't know if she should trust him. About to send him away, she heard a voice speaking behind her.
"Hazel? What are you doing here?" Five went to stand beside Vanya.
"You know this guy?" Vanya said, surprised at how casual the two were around each other.
"Oh, you haven't met him yet, have you?" He turned to her. "Hazel worked for the Commission and was one of the people with ridiculous masks who broke into the Academy a week ago in the future. I talked about him yesterday."
Vanya stared at him before turning to the man who she now knew was called Hazel. A big sigh escaped her mouth as she swivelled around and walked towards the living room.
"Come in, I'm sure you have a lot to talk about," she called over her shoulder. Five stepped aside and let him in.
"Thanks..." he muttered under his breath before glancing at Five. "Who's that girl?"
Amused by howfrightened Hazel looked, Five gave him a cheeky grin. "That's Vanya, my sister."
They walked into the living room where Vanya had already made herself comfortable and Hazel's eyes immediately shot to her.
"You're Vanya? The one from the concert? The one who was supposed to be responsible for the apocalypse?" She nodded in affirmation. "Wha—How do you look—what, maybe fourteen?"
"Thirteen actually, and to answer your question; I have no fucking clue." She sipped on an apple juice box, resting one arm behind her head. He stared at her blankly which startedto annoy her more and more. She still didn't fully trust him—even though Five did—so she was being very cautious in his presence.
"Sit down, Hazel." Five commanded. "Now, tell us. How are you here and why?"
"Well, to be totally honest with you, I came here to ask you that. I have no idea why I'm here in 2003, I just got time-jumped to this year together with Agnes."
"Who the hell is Agnes?"
"The donut lady from the donut shop. You know, the one where you killed all those people." Vanya raised an eyebrow at this but decided to let it drop...for now.
"Oh yes, the woman who suggested for me to drink milkwhen I asked for coffee." He frowned at the memory. "And to answer the question you came here for: I don't know. I didn't even know you were here in the first place, let alone know why. So, the Commission didn't send you?"
