Chapter 14: If I Have To Go...
---------------
Five rushed downstairs, the black journal in his hand. This was simultaneously the most terrifying and incredible thing he ever had the pleasure of knowing. He had to tell his siblings about it.
He kind of hoped Vanya was awake by now; she was the first person he wanted to tell it to. He knew she wasn't though, because otherwise, one of his siblings would've alerted him immediately, he was sure.
Halfway down the stairs, an alarm blared throughout each and every crevice of the building. It was different from the usual mission alarms; he'd never heard this one before.
He could hear some rustling noises from the floor beneath him and he sped up, then realised he could literally space jump there and used his powers to appear in front of the infirmary. Klaus, Allison and Diego were lounging in the hallway, their shoulders somewhat relaxed even though their guard was up at the sound of the alarm.
"Guys, did something happen? Is Vanya—" he rushed out, looking down at his brothers and sister while placing the black journal safely inside a pocket in his blazer.
"Don't worry, man. Vanya just woke up and she's with dad and Pogo in there now. They said nobody could go inside as long as they're busy operating," Diego said with his eyes closed, head leaning back against his arms.
"Where are Luther and Ben?"
"Ben went to grab some food and drinks about half an hour ago but Luther's getting him," Allison answered, eyeing the book he just hid away. "What's that?" She made a rectangle in the air and pointed at his blazer, where the book was very prominent.
Five shrugged, taking it out and showing it to his sister with the initials clear as day. "Needed some distraction so I took myself to my room and began reading one of the old man's journals. Three guesses to what this one's about—though, you'll never get it."
"Oh! Me! I get to guess first!" Klaus raised his hand and put on his thinking-face. "Uhm..." He tapped his lip thoughtfully, his eyes cast to the ceiling as if it were magically going to give him the answer—which it didn't, if you were curious. "More crap about us and our powers?"
"No."
"100 ways to annoy children?" Diego tried next, twirling a pocketknife in his hand. Five let out an amused chuckle but shook his head, turning to look at Allison.
"Probably a whole damn essay on how much we disappoint him," she sighed. She and her siblings had a lot of daddy issues and she idly wondered how a normal life would've been like. One where she was born normal, without these freaky powers ruining lives.
"Unfortunately: no. Have you ever wondered what happened to the other children like us?" Five asked. At the question, Diego opened his eyes in surprise while Klaus sat up from the ground. They all looked at him with curiosity, already knowing where this was heading.
"Are...are you saying that—"
"There were 43 women who gave birth the same day and way we were born. I'd never put much thought to it, myself..." He started pacing. "36. There are 36 others like us out there in the world. Dad has been keeping an eye on some of them for a while. There's another academy in Europe. I don't know how many members it has, but there's at least five mentioned in here. This is incredible!"
They stared at him, jaws to the floor and frozen in their places. Even Klaus didn't know what to say to that.
How hadn't they heard about them? How had their father kept this a secret for all these years?
