You were falling.
It seemed so terribly unbelievable, but you were falling and falling through the shadows, tumbling deeper into the darkness with every moment. It was as though the world itself had fallen apart all around you, leaving you with...with nothing.
A void, a never ending blackness, a big bunch of...nothing.
There was nothing but darkness and little bits and pieces of your life, swirling and twirling in the shadows.
Tangled up blankets becoming caught on a root (where had that come from?), books flying and flapping about like paperback birds, knickknacks and little things vanishing in the shadows, everything that you knew falling and falling and falling...until it was all gone. Darkness fell about you but a flash of light caught you eye. Despite your utter confusion, you managed to grab it just as you crashed upon...
Upon where?
For a moment, you were too stunned to see. The fall had not been too painful but it had stunned you enough to leave you silent and aching. The darkness was suddenly gone, leaving a spinning world around you. Everything blurred together but soon you saw it clearly.
A twilight sky full of purples and blues, stars twinkling here and there (where was the hole? Where had you fallen from?).
The tops of trees rustling in the soft wind.
Where were you, you wondered.
Looking about, you saw that you were in...a forest? That's what it seemed to be. Tall, twisted trees and emerald green grass lay around you, a strange blue mist filling the air. For a moment, you lay in the grass as your eyes roamed around this odd place. You'd never seen anything like really. The trees were gnarled and twisted into strange shapes, tangled together and creating shadowy figures that seemed to move. Wild flowers popped up from the tall grass, neon colored and...humming almost. And the wind, it seemed to whisper and laugh all on it's own.
Where were you? What had happened?
A strange shape suddenly caught your eye and, on shaky legs, you stood up and stumbled your way towards it. It was hard at first. You mind was still swirling from your fall and you struggled to make your way to it. But you got stronger with each step, finally reaching it.
It was a post.
Tall and old, bent over with age and covered with crooked signs nailed on it. You were able to make out the twisted, curly letters painted on the wooden arrows.
"Hatter's House."
"The Duchess's Manor."
"D. and D. Garden."
"The White Castle."
"White Manor."
"The Calling Caverns."
"The Wild Woods."
"The Wishing Well."
"The Castle of Hearts."
Gazing at the sign, a thought suddenly slipped its way into your mind. It was a strange thought and you tried to brush it away...but you couldn't. It grew and grew until your head began to spin and ache, this horrible, terrible, sick thought:
You were in Wonderland.
A sudden shock made you jump up and yelp. Looking down at your hand, you remembered the flashing thing you'd caught...it was your cell phone. The device was still full of static, buzzing and burning in your hand before it suddenly shut off. The black screen reflected your face, pale and frightened and full of fear.
Wonderland...you were in Wonderland.
And you had to get out. With no other choice, you thought back to the old story that you knew all so well. Perhaps, you thought, some of the characters could help you find your way home...the idea had you thinking back to the character you had chosen in the game and, with no other options being presented, you went to find them.
Turning back to the dark forest, you could make out several shadowy paths through the wispy blue fog around you. The air smelled strangely sweet as you turned back to the sign and picked your path. Who did you choose again...?
The Mad Hatter (Hatter's House).
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (D. and D. Garden).
The White Rabbit (White Manor).
The Cheshire Cat (The Wild Woods).
The March Hare (Hatter's House).
The Knight of Hearts (The Wild Woods).
The Queen of Hearts (The Castle of Hearts).
Still shaking, you told yourself that everything would work out in the end.
Perhaps, you thought, this was all just some strange dream. Perhaps you would wake up safe and sound in your own home...but for now, you were somewhere else, somewhere strange and slightly scary. And all you could do was walk forward and hope it truly was a dream.
Down the path you went, walking through the dark woods and trying to ignore the feelings racing through you.
The feeling of being watched.
The feelings of not truly being alone.
Fear and uncertainty and worry and a million things bubbled up inside, churning and turning in your belly until you felt sick. But you told yourself to ignore it, to keep going down this little path. You told yourself that it was only...
"A dream. A nightmare, nothing more then that."
Behind you, golden eyes blinked and a smile grew wide and wicked, sharp teeth glinting in the pale light.
"Welcome back, dear Alice~" a cool voice whispered, a whisper so soft that you didn't hear a single word.
