"Take some more tea,' the March Hare said to Alice very earnestly, 'you can't have a tea party without having a cup of tea!"
You didn't have to walk alone for very long.
Along the widening path you went, walking quietly and quickly and listening for any sign of danger. Though you didn't know why, you felt certain that something was wrong. Perhaps it was just nerves (you had been through quite an ordeal) but perhaps...it was something more.
Something real.
There was a terrifying chill in the air, a cold and heavy feeling that hung like a heavy fog. You felt as though something could happen at any moment, something...something terrible. But why? What was it that frightened you so? Was it a beast stalking you, waiting to strike? Or another sort of danger that Wonderland had in store? Before you could even consider what it might be, you found it.
The tea party.
There it sat in the middle of the forest, a welcome change from the dark and the cold.
It was in a neat little clearing, a long table full of good things and surrounded by mismatched chairs...but no guests. Not a one. The table was set and the tea was steaming but the chairs were empty. Stepping carefully into the clearing, you looked around and called out softly.
"Hello?"
At the sound of your voice, a face popped out from the other side of the clearing. You both jumped at the sight of one another, the little brown face full of shock and surprise.
"Alice?!" The stranger asked.
With a wide smile on his face, the man ran over to you. He had warm, nut brown skin and wild dark hair, big black eyes full of joy and excitement. He was a very tall, very skinny man with gangling limbs and wide features.
"Oh, Alice!! You're back, you're back, oh my heart, you're back!"
His excited shouting must have attracted who you were certain to be the Mad Hatter, a tall fellow with crazy clothes, pale skin, and pitch black hair.
"Whatever are you going on about, Hare...Alice!"
Before you could even say a word, both men had taken your hands and were dragging you off towards the table. The Hatter babbled cheerfully, words spilling out like a river, but the Hare said very little. Mostly...he just smiled a wide, almost unnerving smile. His eyes never left you either, it was as though he couldn't look away. It was like if he did, you would vanish in a second, never ever to be seen again...what a strange man.
"Welcome, welcome, welcome to your party, Alice!" Hatter cheered, "I'm so glad that you've come!"
"My party?" You asked, glancing at one and then the other.
"Your party!" The March Hare replied, "Hatter's planned it all for you."
Into a bubblegum pink chair you were placed, each man taking a seat next to you. Hatter sat to your left, still babbling about your "goodbye" party (which didn't make sense at all but then again, what were you really expecting?)and the Hare sat to your right, smiling happily as he poured out cups of tea...oh, how strange his smile was!
For some reason, that cold and frightened feeling returned, stronger and colder then before.
"Oh, Alice, I'm just so delighted that you've returned to Wonderland! Everything's so dull without our Alice, you know." The Hatter said.
You tried to break through his babbling, trying to ask what he was talking about. After all, you'd never been to Wonderland at all...but the Hatter was lost in his own chatter, pouring cup after cup of tea and cutting cakes as he talked all the while. Confused, you turned to the March Hare who grinned at you sweetly.
"You'll really have to excuse Hatter, he's positively batty. He's forgotten that you're different now."
"Do you mean...was there another Alice?" You asked.
His smile froze a little. Picking up a small, sharp knife the Hare toyed with the blade, flipping and spinning it in an almost elegant manner. The silver knife flashed between his fingers as the Hare replied,
"Oh...yes. Quite tragic, that one."
His voice was soft and his eyes were far away, as though he was running over memories in his mind. But soon they returned, dark brown eyes locking onto you.
"There are many things you don't understand yet, dear. And I think...perhaps someone ought to explain them to you. Follow me, Alice, and I'll...help you."
There was something about the way he said that, a certain edge in his voice. It was then that you noticed the shadow in his eyes and the twisted look of his smile. He looked over excited, but for what? What had the Hare so excited...and why was he still playing with that knife?
The blade was flashing and spinning in his hand and his eyes never once left you. You had to ask yourself...did he really mean to help you?
"Alice!"
You jumped at the sound of Hatter's voice, turning to look at him quickly. As you did, you caught a glance of the Hare's frown. He didn't like it, did he? Your paying attention to someone else seemed to bother him. The March Hare glared as the Hatter asked,
"Is Matthias bothering you? He's such a silly creature, with his secrets and his sharp things, oh, he thinks I don't know! But I do, I do!"
A chill of fear ran down your spine, as though ice water had been poured inside of you. Sharp things? Secrets? You wondered what on earth Hatter was talking about...you wondered if "Matthias" was truly to be trusted. But then you remembered who you were talking to. It was, after all, the Mad Hatter, and he never truly made sense. And perhaps, you considered, he simply didn't want you talking to the March hare.
"I'm silly?" Matthias quipped, "go back to your tea trays and un-birthday parties, Alice and I are having a conversation!"
The Hatter scoffed, telling his friend "Alice can do what she likes and so can I, Matty. Now, where's the sugar..."
The two turned away from each other, the Hare still toying with his knife and the Hatter thoroughly distracted with his quest for more sugar. Taking his chance, Matthias leaned towards you. His lips brushed against your ear, cool breath on your neck as he whispered softly,
"See what I mean? Batty! Well, we all are, but Hatter is positively useless most of the time. Come along, Alice, and we'll talk."
A part of you knew he was right.
The Hatter didn't seem to visit reality much, content with his own strangeness. You needed to find a way out of here but something told that the Hatter wouldn't be of any help with that. He would, you thought, much rather have you stay for tea then take you home.
A part of you was afraid.
There was something about the Hare that had you frightened. It was, perhaps, the darkness in his eyes...or the way he played with the knife as though it were a toy instead of a danger. There was something so strange about him, but then...wasn't all of Wonderland strange?
You were so, so terribly confused! But you knew that a choice had to be made. Should you stay at Hatter's tea party? Or take your chances with the Matthias?
Stay with the Mad Hatter.
Leave with Matthias.
