"Nonsense! Nothing would be what it is because everything would be what it wasn't and contrary wise, what is it wouldn't be and what it wouldn't it would be...you see?"
You were quite certain that you were on the right path.
It was a short, neat little road made of pure white, circle stones all set together. After walking along it for quite a while, you soon found yourself approaching a large home.
Painted white with a blue roof and shutters, it was a picturesque looking home, cute and cozy. Flower beds full of white tulips surrendered the home, a hedged garden off to the side and a tall, shady tree on the other. As perfect as it all seemed, you couldn't deny a strange feeling bubbling up inside. You weren't sure why but...you were afraid of this place.
The white rabbit's manor.
Why did such a place frighten you so? Looking about, you saw nothing but perfect beauty. Perhaps it was the wind running through the air that sent the chill down your spin...Perhaps it was only the rustling in the forest that made fear strike your heart...but in the end, you simply weren't sure. Anyone would think that it was all rather lovely and, on the outside, it was. You couldn't understand this feeling but...you didn't like it. You wanted to leave. And you almost did, turning around on the path only to walk right into someone's chest.
You hadn't seen him. You hadn't heard him.
But there was suddenly a man in front of you, looking down at you with a big, bright smile. Hands wrapped around you, gripping your arms as the stranger exclaimed happily,
"Alice!"
The White Rabbit...it had to be him.
Curly white hair that hung around his pale face, a neat white suit and pristine gloves and a red checkered tie (a golden chain peaked out of his pocket too...was that the famous pocket watch?), and red eyes...dark, shining red eyes, like pools of blood surrounded by thick white lashes. An almost elated expression stretched across his face, a too wide smile and round, excited eyes.
"Oh, Alice!" The Rabbit said, "you've come back!!"
Shocked and surprised by, well, everything you said nothing as the Rabbit began to chatter about how happy he was, how much he missed you, how different thing would be this time. He seemed almost lost in his own happiness until he suddenly stopped, a surprised look on his face. Turning back, he asked in a soft voice,
"You don't remember me, do you?" He asked. "No, no, of course not! You're so forgetful, Alice, you never seem to remember a thing!"
With a chuckle and a smile, the Rabbit took your hand in his and gave it a little peck. His cold lips on you skin made you shiver, eyes locked onto the tall man's form...why did he scare you so? Why did he make you shudder with every passing moment?
"William Hase, at your service." He said.
And then he smiled once more, tugging on your hand as he began walking down the path, pulling you right towards his house. For a moment, you remained silent and confused. Wonderland...the White Rabbit...it was all so strange, so confusing, so...baffling! But the closer you came towards his house, the more certain you felt....you didn't want to be there.
There was something inside, you thought. Something dark and ugly, hidden discretely behind pristine paint and pretty tulips.
You'd been so caught up in your confusion and growing fear that you hadn't paid a lick of attention to what the White Rabbit was saying...at least, not until something even stranger pulled you back into the moment.
"I'm sorry about before, dear. I'll be more...delicate this time."
Why was he sorry, you wondered. And why would he have to be "delicate?" The more you thought about it, the more it seemed like there was another Alice...had there been? What had happened to her? Did the White Rabbit have something to do with it?
"Things will be different this time, Alice!" He continued. "You're different so I will be too, that makes sense doesn't it? After all, if you're not the same you then I won't be the same me and then everything will be better."
Why were you different?
What had happened last time?
A surge of courage caused you to pull your hand away from his, gently yet quickly, and stop in your tracks. William froze for a moment, standing stark still, before turning around to look at you. He wasn't smiling anymore. And for some reason, the cool look on his face was so, so much worse then his too wide smile had been...
"Alice?" He asked in a tight, tense tone, "whatever is the matter, dear?"
What was the matter?
William hadn't done anything really except for be a little too excited...and was that any kind of crime? You wondered if perhaps you were being just a little too paranoid, finding shadows and secrets when there was nothing but sunshine to be seen. Suddenly he was smiling again, pulling out a golden pocket watch and flicking it open. Quiet ticks filled the air, the golden watch flashing brightly...there was something inside. A black in white picture tucked away.
You had only seen it for a moment but you wondered what it might be.
"Alice," William said in an almost scolding tone, "it's nearly tea time! Why don't we go inside of a bit of tea and we'll talk. We certainly do have a lot of catching up to do...it's been so long since I've seen you, dear."
You'd never been to tea with the White Rabbit. You'd never talked to him or anything...so why was he so insistent that you had?
"I don't...I think you have the wrong Alice." You finally said.
William closed his watch with a hard snap, quietly returning the device to his coat pocket as he looked at you. There was a flash of something in his red eyes...anger? Or annoyance? Perhaps but he also seemed rather sad for a second.
"No...no, you're our Alice."
He looked at you with a stare so that it made you shiver, your skin crawling and heart thumping in your chest as William crept closer.
"You're just confused, dear. You always are at first but...you figure it out quickly! Oh, Alice!" William reached out, clasping his hands around yours and pulling you towards him. "Choose me this time! You're always choosing the others-Hatter and the Cat and those terrible twins! Dear Alice...won't you choose me this time?"
His grip became harder, tighter and colder. You flinched in pain, feeling your fingers being squeezed by his not-so-delicate grasp. But if the White Rabbit noticed your discomfort at all, he cared nothing for it...
"Come home with me! I'll explain everything to you, I'll help you! I'll be the one to make you happy, Alice...I can be your happy ending."
He pulled you closer, too close. Looking up into his ruby red eyes, your heart began to beat so wildly that you thought it might burst out of your chest and run, run, run away...could such a thing happen in Wonderland?
"Wouldn't you like that, dear?" William whispered. "It won't be like all the other times, everything will be different. Please, please, dear Alice..."
There was something in his red eyes. A darkness. A twisted, dark gleam that made your whole body shiver with fear. There was something very wrong with the White Rabbit.
"Choose me."
He wasn't going to let you go. Thinking quickly, you went over your two choices in your mind, wondering which was the best to make. Both had merits and both had faults and somehow...both seemed so very terrifying.
If you refused his offer and ran away, he'd certainly come after you...would you be able to outrun him? Where would you go from there? What would you do?
Perhaps it would simply be safer to take tea with the White Rabbit...maybe then he would calm down, maybe then things wouldn't be...so tense. So frightening.
What should you do? Where should you go?
William's house.
Away from here.
