"Oh, dear Alice! We're all mad here! I'm mad, you're mad, you must be or else you wouldn't have come."

You were lost.

Horribly, terribly, utterly lost. The wild woods had proved to be much more confusing and much more dangerous then you could have ever thought. At first, you were walking slowly and carefully. But as the path became more and more confusing, you began to walk faster and faster until you were running. You ran and ran through the woods as the wind began to howl and whirl around you, sounding almost as though it were laughing...wait.

That was laughter.

It was a soft, almost whispering chuckle that slowly grew louder and louder...and closer. Looking around in the darkness, you saw nothing around you...Just strange shapes in the shadows, bushes and branches that your frightened eyes twisted into monsters. But as the laughter grew close, so did a voice...a person, hiding somewhere in the wilderness.

Unseen and unknown, your heart began to beat wildly as looked around you, searching for some clue of who was speaking.

"Alice! Dear Alice!" A silky voice whispered from the darkness, "Welcome back to Wonderland!"

Who was out there in the dark? Who was whispering and laughing...and watching you.

"It's been so long since you've stumbled into my neck of the woods!" the voice continued. "Whatever are you up to, Alice?"

A terrible feeling began to twist inside your body, a sort of chill that slipped into your heart and left you feeling...cold. Afraid. A little voice inside whispered that you should run, run away from this stranger, but you felt frozen. Unable to to move, you found yourself struggling to stammer out an answer.

"I-I'm trying to find my way out of here," Your voice was shaking, much more then you would have liked, "I'm trying to go home."

"Is that so?"

And then you saw it. At first, you thought it was the pale moon, thin and white and crescent shaped. But "it" slowly began to turn around in the air until it hung low in front of you and then your realized...it was a smile. A thin, sharp toothed grin hovering in the air. And then your realized who you had been talking to:

The Cheshire Cat.

Two big, blue cat eyes suddenly opened wide, shining blue around thin black slits. The smile grew wider and sharper as he began to speak, a man's silky voice slipping out from between pointed teeth.

"Oh, Alice!" The cat cooed, "sweet little thing! Tell me, dear, how do you know that you're not already home? You've tried so many times to leave before but you always return...perhaps Wonderland is where you belong after all!"

"What do you mean?" You asked.

"Surely, if one tries time and time again to go to one place but always ends up in another place then the latter is their true destination. Don't fight fate, darling, it's useless."

"No, no," You said, feeling more confused by the second, "what did you mean by before? I've never been to Wonderland..."

The cat laughed again, blue eyes twinkling in the darkness of the forest.

"Oh, of course! You've forgotten again!"

He sounded so amused at your reply, almost as though he thought that you were being cute or silly. The cat crept a little closer to you, eyes gleaming as they hovered above you. There was a slight purr in his tone as he whispered,

"Would you like a little help then, Alice? You're always so insistent on this little game of yours, so I'll play along...if you'll play my game."

You didn't like the sound of that. There was something in his voice that made you shiver, a sort of smugness. He must know, you thought, that you really didn't have much of a choice here. There was something malicious in his smile, sharp teeth shining too brightly in the darkness. He was enjoining this. Your fear, your discomfort, he loved it. Whatever his game was, you didn't want to play it. But...did you really have a choice here? You were lost in the Wild Woods and it seemed like the only way out would be through the cat.

"What...what game?" You asked.

His grin grew, the darkness around his hovering features beginning to swirl and rush.

"My favorite game, darling. You probably don't remember it, do you?" He spoke with a touch of glee in his voice, excitement rising with every word. "I'll give you a riddle and you have to answer it. If you answer right, I'll lead you out of the woods. If you answer wrong, well..."

He was changing, morphing into something...no, someone.

In front of your very eyes, a man was born out of the darkness. He was handsome, at least at first glance. He was dark skinned and with chiseled features, tall, too, with a slight and lean figure. Long, thick black curls tumbled down his back and to his hips beautifully. His long, tattered cloak whipped in the breeze, covering his mismatched, messy clothing. The Cheshire Cat flashed you a brilliant, toothy smile and said in his silky, smooth voice,

"Boris Romanov."

He would be terribly handsome...But those eyes. Those bright blue, feline eyes and that sharp toothed smile. They were still there, standing out on his handsome form, and reminding you of who you were really looking at.

Boris. The Cheshire Cat.

He was handsome but a trickster a stranger still...could you truly trust him? The glimmer in his cat eyes made you wonder what he had in mind for you but...what else could you do? Unease bubbled inside as you thought about how lost you were, trapped deep into the Wild Wood with no way out.

"What do you say Alice?" Cheshire asked.

You could say yes. If you answered correctly (and perhaps you would) then he would lead you out of the darkness and confusion that the Wild Woods brought.

You could say no. One had to wonder what Boris would do if you answered incorrectly...but would you be able to make your own way out of the woods?

The idea of being lost forever in these woods seemed so frightening...

"What's the riddle?" You finally asked.

The cat grinned, flashing his sharp teeth once more. Creeping close, he took your hand in his and recited his riddle softly:

"We hurt without moving. We poison without touching. We bear the truth and the lies. We are not to be judged by out size. What are we?"

That were they indeed. You took a moment to think it over, repeating the riddle several times in your head. Truth, lie, poison and pain...what was the answer? You thought and thought but as you did, the Cheshire Cat was moving. Slowly but surely, he was creeping so much closer. His body moved like a shadow, soundless and agile, each stepped matched by yours.

"What are we, Alice?" He hissed excitedly.

The more you backed away, the quicker he stepped and the closer he came. As though he feared you might run, Boris lashed out and grabbed you. Dark hands reached out quickly, grasping your wrists and pulling you close. You felt his claws digging into your skin, bits of blood sipping down your wrists as his eyes began to glow brightly.

"Come, Alice," he said in a low, mean voice, "what are we?"

You had to answer.

He was too close, too wild, too strange...and you wanted this game to be over. Two possible answers popped into your head but only one of them could be right. Looking into his blue eyes, you knew that you had to choose one of them...

But which one would you pick?

Words.

Secrets.
