"My brothers going to be here soon, maybe he'll know what to do. He has that thing going on where he hangs out with gang members but never really joined. Cause he's a pussy." Ruby paced, his hand on his chin.
"I'm fine though, I just—"
"No." He shook his head at her, "you're displaced, in the wrong neighborhood you know what a Santo would do to fresh Diablo meat?"
She copied him, shaking her head. "That's why we stay in East Los."
"I—" he groaned when somebody knocked on his bedroom door, marching toward it. "Who is it?"
"It's me."
Ruby glanced at Sabina, she ran a hand through her hair, waiting for him to open it. "It's my brother."
She nodded for him to go on, and he did, revealing a guy with a hat on his head. "Um.." he stepped into the room, shutting the door behind him. "Who's the girl?"
"This is my friend Sabina." Ruby said, "she needs my help and I'm going to give it to her."
"Oh so like a.. sexual thing?" Ruby sucked his teeth, shoving him. "I'm joking." Mario laughed, nodding at Sabina. "Lookin' a little rough, everything okay?"
His little brother shook his head, "she was displaced, she was almost beat to death and long story short I found her in our backyard. So I let her in through the window."
"The window?" Mario sat on his bed. "Does mom know about this?"
Ruby shook his head, "no, and she won't. Cause I have a plan."
"Okay." Mario nodded, "what's your plan?"
"Um.." Ruby looked at her and she looked at Mario. "I was hoping you would say 'no, I have one, here's what we're gonna do'."
Mario hummed, studying her. "Displaced huh?" She nodded, and he spoke again. "What if we take her to Spooky?"
"Spooky? As in Oscar Diaz?" Ruby raised his eyebrows, beginning to shake his head with a small gasp. "Are we talking about the same Spooky?" He fully shook his head now. "Are you insane?"
"Insane? Why?"
Ruby stomped over to Sabina, "may I?" When she nodded, he lifted her sweater, then the bandages he had taped onto her skin, showing him the tattoo that had been tried to be sliced off. It was covered in Neosporin, any wrong move and it could start bleeding again.
Mario's jaw dropped at the tattoo, "I—" he was speechless, "you're a Diablo."
"I think the correct term—given she's a female—is Diabla."
"You're in the wrong neighborhood." Mario shook his head, "you're gonna die here."
"Mario, she needs our help."
"What am I suppose to do? Tell Spooky to help a Diablo?"
"It's worth a try." Ruby said, "if you're not down I'll take her myself. Come on Sabina."
Sabina stood slowly, limping across the room with Ruby.
"Fine!" Mario exclaimed, "I'll go with you, if it doesn't work then it's on you."
"Ruby, who is she?"
They all looked up at Geny's voice, she stood by the couch with her hands on her hips. "Um.." Ruby glanced at Sabina, then back to his mom. "She's my friend, and she was just leaving."
"Mija are you okay?" Geny walked toward her, inspecting her busted lip. "Oh my god, are you hurt?"
"I helped her clean up already ma."
Mario nodded, "yeah, we're just going to walk her home now."
Geny nodded softly, "okay, be careful, please."
Ruby kissed her cheek before helping Sabina walk out of the front door. Mario trailed behind them with a stale face. "So what happened?" He crossed his arms, "I think I deserve to know at least that."
"I got DP'd."
He opened his palm, nodding. "Well obviously we know that already. But, why?"
"My ex boyfriend was a very jealous man, he thought I did everything in spite of him. He told my father I slept with a Blood and that I was knocked up, so they both had me removed."
"Was it true?" Ruby raised his eyebrow curiously.
"No." She shook her head, "I lost my home all because he was jealous of something that never happened."
Mario looked down at his feet, unsure of what to say to her. She was on the verge of tears and he wasn't good with feelings. All he knew was that nobody should have to go through that.
"I'm sorry." Ruby said, "but hey, look on the bright side, hopefully Spooky will let you stay with them for a little while."
"I doubt it." Mario mumbled, earning an elbow to the ribs from Ruby. He groaned, "I mean hopefully," he rubbed his side. "Although, maybe don't mention the part you were in their rival gang."
"So lie to him?"
"No." Ruby shook his head. "Don't lie, we'll tell him the truth, and if he doesn't like it then maybe you can just stay with us."
"With Olivia in the house?" Mario chuckled.
Ruby huffed, stomping his foot. "Do you ever shut up?"
He rolled his eyes, sticking his hands in his pockets as they walked up to the Diaz house. Better known as the Santos hangout spot.
"That's Spooky." Ruby said, pointing at Oscar. "Next to him is Cesar, his little brother."
Oscar began to stand up, furrowing his eyebrows at the group of three on his yard. He set his forty down, nodding at Cesar to stand up as well. Then e took a couple of strides toward them, stopping in front of Sabina with a mug. "Do I know you?"
