Sabina gasped, sitting up, panting heavily. Oscar rubbed his head, setting his hand on her shoulder. "You're okay." He said, "go back to sleep, I'm right here." She laid back down, catching her breath as she shut her eyes.
That's how it had been for the past week. Oscar barely slept watching over her. She would wake up in the middle of the night terrified, filled with anxiety.
When she was on the streets she had to sleep for a bit, then wake up and move to another spot, so her mind was getting use to that, now that she didn't have to; it was hard to sleep through the whole night. If it wasn't that, it was the nightmares of what Dario's friends did to her, how her dad just let them do that to her.
Oscar kept his eyes open as she scooted closer to him, almost hugging his arm. He took in a deep breath, shutting his eyes. It felt as if he slept for two minutes, but Cesar's alarm for school was going off in the other room, causing him to open his eyes.
"I'm out." Cesar said softly at his door, causing him to nod.
"Be careful." He mumbled.
Throughout the sleepless nights, Oscar thought about pursuing Sabina to make Dario and her father mad, but that would start a war and her life would be at risk again.
He slowly maneuvered his way out of the bed, pulling his shirt down as it rose up. He walked into the kitchen, making sure to leave his bedroom door open just in case she woke up and realized she was alone. A knock on the front door caused him to furrow his eyebrows, so he walked over to open it.
Ruby stood with a nervous grin on his face. "Hey." He said, "sorry I didn't come sooner, I got busy with school." Oscar let him in, walking back into then kitchen without a word. "How is she?"
He nodded, "she's asleep."
"She's sleeping? Cesar told me she couldn't sleep."
Oscar sat at the table, shrugging. "She can get at least three hours of sleep if someone's in the bed with her."
"Oh." Ruby nodded, "well that's good, how are you holding up?"
"I'm alright."
Ruby cleared his throat awkwardly, "okay then, tell her I stopped by?"
Oscar nodded, watching him back up toward the door with caution. Before he walked out he spoke again. "Actually, you don't have to tell her that, I'll just be back later."
Oscar continued to nod as he walked out, shutting the door behind him. He sat in silence for a while, then slid his phone out of his pocket, dialing the only person that could tell him what to do.
"Spooky! My favorite Santo. What's up homie?"
"Cuchillos." Oscar sighed softly, "I need a favor man." He leaned his arms onto the dining table, "I need you to get me a meeting with an OG."
"For sure." He said, "who?
He didn't want to say it, Santos weren't allowed to. So he covered his mouth as his spoke the prohibited name. "Lucifer."
Cuchillo's laughed, "wait, I think my phones breaking up cause it sounded like you just said 'Lucifer'." He chuckled, "and that's crazy."
"I did say that." He nodded, "I need to speak with him."
Sabina listened from his bedroom, was he stupid? He was going to get himself killed.
"Im speaking to Spooky right? Oscar Diaz?"
"Yes." Oscar said, "Spooky."
"Are you trying to kill yourself? Cause that's not a good way out."
He huffed, "it's a serious matter, I wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't."
Cuchillos thought for a second, before finally agreeing. "Okay, I'll get on that for you. But this is on you, if you end up dead—"
"I know." He cleared his throat, "I'll be careful, text me the details."
Cuchillos hummed before Oscar hung up, setting his phone on the table.
Sabina stood from the bed, her feet hitting the cold tiled floor. She stood at the door frame as she spoke. "Everything okay?"
His distraught face changed drastically as he plastered a smile on. "Hey! Good morning." He stood, "you hungry?" She shook her head softly and he sighed, "you gotta eat something."
"I'm not hungry." She took a couple of steps out of the room, crossing her arms over her chest. "But thank you, Spooky."
"You can call me Oscar." He chuckled, grabbing a box of cereal and a bowl, "I have shit to do today but Cesar should be back around four, and the homies always hang outside, so you'll never really be alone." He poured the cereal, then opened the refrigerator for the milk.
She nodded softly, "what are you doing today?"
"Some important Santo's business. If it was anything else I'd cancel, but sadly, this I can't." He grabbed a spoon, putting the milk back into the refrigerator.
"Hmm." She hummed with her eyebrows furrowed, causing him to look up at her with a small smile on his face.
"Why are you looking at me like that?"
She watched him pour milk into the cereal bowl, then he slid it over to her, handing her a spoon. "Just be careful okay?"
He kissed his teeth, "girl I'm always careful." He picked up his phone from the table since it had vibrated at least five times, implying he had received a message. He read the texts, he had gotten addresses and a time to meet. "Eat your cereal, I gotta get dressed."
