I stand frozen as a woman, a beautiful young woman wraps her arms tightly around me. I peek at Axon from my side but he was also in a state of surprise. "Save me", I mouth to him which fortunately he was able to pick up. "Come on Brooke, stop harassing Elliot." He pulls me lightly away from the woman and only by then was I able to take a clear look on the attacker. "Ah!"
"Ah!" The woman copies.
"Ah?" Axon follows. "What's wrong boo?"
"Her-She-She's the one in the cafe!"
She smiles widely, crosses her arms, takes a glass of champagne from the server and sip from it. It's odd how I can see her on the cafe bar doing the same thing but with her regular flat white. "It's my pleasure that you remember me, Elliot."
"B-but how did you know each other?" I fiddle with my fingers and try to look away from her as I remember the nasty looks she gave us when Axon comes over to the cafe just to flirt with me.
Axon takes my hand to his squeezing it lightly to sooth me. "About that, um, will you listen to me?" I become even more wary of how anxious Axon sounded. Is he keeping something from me? What is his connection with this woman? What if they're actually engaged and I'm keeping them apart? What if- "Elliot." I hold on to him tightly, afraid that someone will take him away from me. "Calm down, it's fine. It's nothing serious."
"The party's about to start. I'll meet you again later. In the meantime, you can talk at the private lounge." I don't want to be rude but my body refuses to respond to her. The thought of her being someone more important to Axon fears me so much that it's making me ridiculously possessive.
Axon leads me to the private lounge just right outside the event hall. The room is serene and quite unlike the large room where everybody's mingling. It's like the calm after storm. That is if the storm's really done. "Elliot, listen to me."
"Who is she, Axon?"
He takes a deep breath creating more anxiety for me. "That's Brooklyn Gray. Like I said when we arrived, she's my second cousin and this is her book launch party."
"Oh."
"Yup."
"You call her Brooke."
"That's her nickname."
"Oh."
I can't believe this! Someone take me and bury me to the ends of the world! I can't believe I went crazy for something so ridiculous. I am so embarrassed I want to disappear right now.
"Boo?"
I hide my face away from him with the throw pillow at my side. "No, sorry. Don't look at me. I'm embarrassed." He chuckles and pulls me to his side discarding the comfort of the pillow. "It's fine boo. I must say I'm happy."
"Happy?"
"To see you jealous."
"What!?" This is so embarrassing, this is so embarrassing, this is so embarrassing! How can I face Brooklyn later? She probably thinks I'm annoying.
"There's something more I need to tell you."
"No, I'm embarrassed enough."
He laughs out loud then kisses me at the top of my head affectionately. "You remember her right, for being a regular at the cafe?"
I nod.
"That cafe, I own it."
"Oh."
"Yup."
"What!?" My heart can't take this much revelation. "Did you hire me because-"
"No, I don't have anything to do with that. It was all a coincidence, really when I met you at the cafe."
