It took quite a few hours and breaking down many doors until we were on the last two on the top floor. Since we seemed like we were making good work, Carl allowed us to split up; Carl to one apartment and Beth and I to the other one.
I was doing my usual of going through the kitchen when I heard a thump, a gasp, and then a yell for help from one of the bedrooms in the apartment Beth and I were in. I quickly made my way to the room she was in to find her pinned to the ground by a rather large woman-like lurker and took another quick moment to realize that there were two in the room and the other one was coming for me.
I quickly scanned the room, looking for something to use as a weapon having left my ax stupidly in the kitchen. I found a screwdriver covered in dried blood on the ground between the quickly moving lurker and myself. I made a dive for the small weapon and just as fast, the lurker was on me.
I managed to roll over onto my back and glared up at the 'man' on top of me. He was gnashing his bloody and yellowing teeth at me as I did my best to keep them away from me. I gripped the small tool in my hand tighter and managed to bring it up as close to its eye as I could, now holding the lurkers face away from mine with one arm. I stabilized the screwdriver in my hand and lined it up with the eye before shoving it up. At the initial hit, it made a small squish that only got worse the farther I pushed the makeshift weapon into its head.
After a few moments of shoving the tool into its head, it finally went limp on top of me. Blood spilled out of the head and onto its face, making me just close my eyes and mouth as hard as I could and turn my head as far as I could away from it. I then managed to roll it off of me and get up before trying to get the screwdriver out of the eye, but, sadly, to no luck.
I glanced over at Beth who seemed to be having a harder time keeping the teeth of the lurker on her away from her face. I quickly scrambled over to her and the thing and tried getting it off of her, but once again with no luck. I gave up and scrambled to my bag next. The quickly opened it and reacher in and pulled out a small hand revolver. I aimed it at the thing on her before turning the safety off and pulling the trigger.
The bullet went into the wall a good foot away from the lurkers head. Beth managed to look at me, "Do you even know how to use the thing?"
I shook my head before holding it up, aiming, and shooting it again. This time, it was closer to the lurker than the first shot, but still not in its head.
Beth made to yell at me again when I cut her off, "I do not know how to use this thing but I am trying to save your life so shut up so I can at least try to get my hands to stop shaking!"
That seemed to shut her up as I took aim again. I took the shot. The lurker fell limp on top of her.
She pushed it off of her as Carl came running in, "I heard gunshots!"
Hands still shaking, I turned the safety back on on the gun and put it back in my bag, "Just some infected but I took care of them."
"Infected?"
Beth nodded, rubbing the blood off her face with her sleeve, "Yea. As Ellie said, she took care of them. We're good."
He scratched the back of his head, "Anyways, I'm done in my apartment, so once you guys are done, one of us could go get them."
I nodded as Beth volunteered to go get the others. Carl said it was okay and I just shrugged.
Beth grabbed her machete off the floor before heading out.
Carl looked at me, "Everything okay?"
I rubbed my hands together, "Are guns supposed to be that loud?"
He gave a small laugh, "Yea, they're pretty loud. Why don't we go get the rest of the stuff we found and get one of the apartments ready? Mine was free of lurkers, we could set up in there. It was two bedroomed so we can put the kids in one room and the supplies in the other."
I nodded, "Yea, let's go get ready for them."
I followed him out of the room.
