Once the three of us were done with packing our things, we set off.
I didn't want to go through the street as it was littered with lurkers and we'd just become mealtime for them instead of getting away, so I led the two kids to the roof. From there, I took a good look around to get my bearings. The town was still mostly foreign to me, so I could only guess we should leave. But we wouldn't have enough supplies if we managed to get out. This town was pretty much in the middle of nowhere and there wasn't much of anything else for a while that I knew of.
So that led me to leading the two kids to jump onto the next door building and going as quietly as we could down its fire escape. From there, we would stick next to the buildings and head back to where I was earlier, scavaging for supplies.
The trip down the street was okay at first. It got worse as we went by a lurker that seemed to be faking to be completely dead. And of course that scared Sophia and she let out a scream, letting the others know where we were.
In all, it was great running from a giant horde of lurkers in a town when your only weapons are a loud gun that you barely know how to use and a pocket knife.
What made it even worse was when Sophia tripped, and while she was struggling to get up, the lurkers came down on her. I had to pull Mac away so we could at least make it out alive.
We eventually made it to where I left the two bags and my ax. I made Mac take one while I took the other and my ax, but at least now I have something better than a small knife to defend us.
She managed to keep up with me until we left the town. We took many back streets and had to hide in many places until enough lurkers lost us that I felt it would be safe for us to leave without them all following us out and keeping us on our toes. Any stragglers that still followed us I just took out with my ax or Mac took out with the pocket knife I gave her about halfway through the running from death ordeal.
I figured it would be best if she could defend herself at a basic level like her father wanted her to. I figured that it would be kinda like giving him a final wish: his daughter could care for herself.
