Clara's POV
I couldn't believe my eyes. Why is he here? Does that mean I have to push my button? No! He could see me do that and then I could get in trouble! My heart was getting faster and my breathing slowly became shallow.
Joseph continued with his introduction. "So I am going to hand you guys your syllabus. You are to have it signed within the next two days. This is a grade, a quiz grade as a matter of fact. Just some rules: You are not allowed to leave the classroom within the first or last 10 minutes of class, unless it's an extreme emergency," he started. And then he looked at me. He continued, "if you come late to my class, you must have a pass. This is the first class of the day, so if a bus is late, I must excuse you if you come in. Unless it's for class purposes, if I see a phone, I'm going to ask you to put it away, or I am going to take it. You can eat in this class, but pick up after yourself, or you will clean this entire classroom during your lunch. Other than that, read the syllabus and get the materials you need for this class by next week."
I didn't know how much longer I could stay in this classroom. I didn't feel comfortable. I raised my hand while shaking.
"Yes?" Joseph said after seeing my hand.
I came up with some lie to get out, but then I realized that it was actually the truth. "I forgot my lunchbox in my home room. Can I please go get it?" I asked while trying not to sound panicky.
He thought about it for a second. Then, he headed towards the door. "Come with me outside for a second, Miss" he said. That only make my heart beat faster. I slowly stood up, and when the teacher wasn't looking, I made eye contact with someone and mouthed "help." I really hope they understood me. I walked outside the classroom, and Joseph sighed.
Joseph whispered, "Listen here, Clara. I can look up your address and information since I work here. So DON'T try playing any games with me. I will make you mine. It's not like I can even get in trouble. The school doesn't even have any cameras! So good luck trying to get me arrested. The police doesn't know something specific about me, and neither do you and the other students. Now, you're going to go back inside, and not say a WORD to anyone! Wait- did you actually forget your lunch box?"
"Yes, I did. I promise," I said. I really did forget my lunch box, but I needed to get in contact with either Jordan or Ryan.
"You can go, but I will need your phone. I don't want you contacting anyone. You are to go and come back, do you understand?" He asked. It's a good thing I have good memory. I nodded in response. I went back into the classroom and gave him my phone after I shut it off, when I then realized I should do something else.
"Mr. Stallman, can I give my phone to my friend instead?" I asked. He sighed and nodded. I went to the person who was sitting next to me and asked her if she can hold onto my phone. She seemed really nice and I could trust her. I told her I was going to be right back and to not let anyone else touch it. I even whispered "not even the teacher." Joseph wrote me a pass, and I calmly but quickly took it. I then left the classroom and headed to my home room teacher. I was trying to breathe on the way there so that I wouldn't be stopped by administration.
I walked into the room and told the teacher I was coming to get my lunchbox. Afterwards, I went up to her and asked her if I could speak quietly in the back of the room. She stood up and walked with me.
"Ms. Lae, I have a very serious issue. My teacher attacked me at the park last week, and I need to get in contact with one of my brothers, but he had me leave my phone in the classroom. Can I use someone's phone to contact my brother?" I asked. I tried not to freak out.
"Oh my! Yes! I will let you use my phone! There is no way I can let you go back to class. Oh, but you have your stuff there, don't you?" She asked. I nodded. "Alright. What I will do is I will contact the front office and tell them what's going on, but I'll tell them to tell your teacher that there was an issue with your schedule and it will take a while to fix. Does that sound good?" She suggested.
