We arrived in Kona, a small town located on Big Island, the largest island in Hawaii. We were already on the Big Island, in Kaliua, so we drove for about forty minutes to get to Kona where Honaunau is.
The National Historical Park Pu'honua O Honaunau was relatively easy to find, that is, after watching my parents question the GPS in each direction that it pointed.
Anyway.... We arrived at the beach.
Yay.
Beach is equal to sand and I hate sand, but I cannot deny that I hate it much less, than I hated at the beginning of this vacation.
However, leaving the sand aside, I love all the features of the beach, love the view of the sea, love the sound of the waves and love the tranquility that it passes me, as long as I don't have to touch the sand or get in the salty water.
"It's getting warmer," my dad says.
"Yes, I've separated some lighter clothes for us and put them in the car, although if someone wants to change their clothes, it's going to have to be inside the car since we're two hours away from the hotel," is my mom's answer.
"We'll have to change clothes again to go to Mauna Kea, right? I read that the top is extremely cold."
"Yes, we'll have to leave the hotel prepared for the cold."
They keep talking intertwined in each other, my father hugging my mother from behind with his arms around her waist. Always the sickening sweet couple, these two are.
My father is right, it's still a little cold, but it's getting warmer. I can already see the sun wanting to emerge from the clouds. The cold will not persist for much longer.
I hear my dad sigh in contentment. "It's beautiful here," he says.
"It is. That is the beauty of nature untouched by man. It's all so beautiful," my mother says with a satisfied sigh as she snuggles closer to my father.
They then decide to walk along the beach holding hands, watching everything around them with wonder filled eyes.
My attention turns to Will, who is taking pictures of the turtles that are resting near the shore. He has a beautiful smile on his face, and I found myself captivated by it.
It's funny. Thinking back now. How can I feel like this when not less than a week ago Will was the bane of my existence?
The sound of my cell phone ringing startles me out of my reverie. I grab it and see Hazel's name on the screen.
"Hello."
"Thank God. I've been calling all day, and no one answered or returned my calls. You people really shouldn't be allowed to make me worry like this," she says, which makes me raise an eyebrow in question even though she cannot see me.
"All day?" I ask skeptically. "Hazel, this is the first time you've called me since the beginning of this vacation."
"Yes, because I wasn't calling you. I was calling mom and dad, but since they didn't answer, I called you."
