Syd doesn't like being put into a corner. She feels as if it's a bad place to be and a bad feeling to have. When put into a corner a person can only make impossible and reckless decisions. No thoughtful decision ever came out of someone being put into a corner.
So she makes the thoughtful decision to not pick up the phone when her mom calls. She knows the woman doesn't want anything good from her. There is no good when it comes to her anymore it seems. After her father died it was like she took a dive off the deep end.
And that would have been understandable but she wasn't alone. She needed to take care of Syd. She wasn't just a widow she was a mother too. It seemed that she neglected that part back when Syd was living with her upstate.
