He stood on an empty beach, cold waves crashing on the bank in front of him, only to retreat soon afterward. The gentle sound of the water flowing made him feel calm, like nothing could ever go wrong.  At least not right this moment of tranquility. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, the smell of fresh air filled his lungs. It was rare. He was so accustomed to the putrid smell of rotten walkers that he viewed fresh air as "rare"

Although a sad truth, it was just how it was now.

Life was all about surviving rather than living.

He missed his younger days, he missed the days when it was much easier. The old days when he didn't have to spend all his time worrying about not dying, either from starvation or getting bitten. He missed those days when his parents were around. Happy, breathing, and full of life. He missed the days when they could come running to his aid whenever he was hurt or felt down. He missed the days when he wasn't expected to be responsible.

And He missed another person, someone who he considered dear to him. He missed him so much that he couldn't even bring him up in conversation without getting melancholy.

He missed Lee.

He missed him more than he could ever express in words.

He spent a large amount of time wondering about the "What if"'s of life. What if he never found out about his bitten parents that day? What if Lee never got bitten in the first place? Would he be better off knowing his parents never turned? Would he be better if Lee was still with him? Would he be better if Kenny survived that crash?

His parents, Lee, Luke, Kenny.

Would he be happier if life didn't snatch away every single person he cared about?

Some days, he would just sit and think what he would do if (Y/N) and AJ left him too. Was it a good thing to imagine? Not at all. It made him sick to his stomach, filling him with such a strong sense of dread which he could suffocate and die from.

He couldn't afford to lose any more people he loved. He knew that if he did, the pain would be insufferable.

He would break.

But then again, he would do almost anything to see them again. Just one last time. Just to tell them all how much he loved them and express his gratitude.

But he knew he couldn't. He couldn't leave (Y/N) and AJ behind. They both needed him as much as he did.

He needed to go back to them.
