KAKERU TOOK A DEEP BREATH, SHUTTING HIS EYES TIGHTLY. He wore a green uniform that showed off his muscular arms, the number 18 stuck on his chest. Kurahara rubbed his stomach uneasy, he wasn't in his best condition that day.
"The boys 5,000 meter finals will begin shortly."
"How's that belly?" Sakaki, beside him asked.
"Hanging in there." Kakeru answered.
"Sorry, but I won't hold back." Sakaki smirked, making Kakeru look down to the ground.
The referee pointed his pistol above into the air, closing his ear with the available one. Once he fired the gunshot, the runners burst into a sprint. Kakeru led the run, his inhumane speed created distance between the group of runners, including Sasaki.
"You can do it, Kurahara! GO!" A man who wore a green tracksuit, supposedly the coach shouted from the sidelines.

A gold medal rested around Kakeru's neck, he managed to win the race. However, the expression on his face was far from happy. Kakeru silently listened to the rest of his team, mostly talking about himself.
"Apparently, he wasn't in good condition."
"What? And he still finished in 13:54?"
"Isn't he still a second year?""DISGRACEFUL." The coach shouted, holding up a piece of paper. "Average times like these are as good as losses! Learn from Kurahara!"
"Yes, sir!"
"We're going back to the school and running ten kilometers! The next race has already begun. That's all!"
"Yes, sir."
The group lifted their bags over their shoulders preparing to run back to their school.
"You don't need to run, Kurahara. Good work." The coach told Kurahara, the other members paused looking at Kakeru.
"Huh? But..."
"Hurry it up, boys!" The coach shouted, noticing that the boys were staring instead of running.
Kakeru opened his mouth to say something, but he quickly closed his mouth. The others had already started to run. Kakeru watched them silently, a feeling of guilt washed up in his stomach.
--
"It's been a while, Kurahara. I was surprised. I ran this course yesterday, too." Sakaki said, "I didn't think you were still running."
"Who were those guys you were with?" Kakeru averted his eyes to the ground.
"None of your business." Kakeru replied coldly.
