“So what should we have?” I ask, flipping through the hotel breakfast. “What about Pancakes?”

“Pancakes? Pancakes for Dinner?” Jerome looks surprised

“Yeah!”

“Leilah, you’re mum-“

“Who cares what my mother says? We’re free! Let’s be rebels!”

“Leilah, Having pancakes for dinner is not being a rebel.”

“Really?” I say with a frown.

Jerome laughs. “Leilah, you are almost too good!”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I ask, crossing my arms.

“You’re the nicest, politest, sweetest most innocent girl I know.”

“I can be mean.” I say.

“Oh yeah?” Jerome says with a laugh. “How?”

“I… I can be selfish.”

“How?”

“Well, There’s this creek down at the bottom of our property, And, I’ve always played there as a kid. Whenever we have guests and my mother asks me to give them a tour, I neglected to show them that part.”

“Was that the-“

“Part you caught me sleeping in? Yes.”

“Leilah.” Jerome says, taking my hands in his. “That is called wanting privacy, Not being selfish.”

“Well, I-“

“Leilah, selfish is not sharing, Selfish is stealing money from the homeless-“

“Who would do that?” I exclaim. “That’s so mean!”

“Exactly. You’re not selfish.”

“What’s yours then?”

“Mine?”

“What’s your selfishness?”

“I.. I..” Jerome says, looking down. “I don’t like sharing.”

“You don’t like sharing?” I say. “What? Are you picky about who you share your toy soldiers with?”
