June of 1943

A V A ' S    P O V

The day was gloomy, skies were gray and it looked as if it was going to rain any second.

I stood outside the local military center where Steve is currently inside attempting to enlist, again. He's already enlisted 3 times this year. But every time, he's gotten the same results. Which I can't lie, I always have a bit of relief for a brief moment because I don't want to see him shipped off to a war zone. But at the same time, I can't help but feel sympathy for him, because this is something he's been dreaming of doing for a long time. Bucky has already enlisted and been shipped off to training, he's been away for months now. Thats another reason why Steve keeps enlisting. He wants to fight the war alongside Bucky. He just wants a chance to be someone more than just a sick boy. But what he doesn't notice is that he is way more than that, but I couldn't change his mind if I tried. He's quite stubborn.

I waited around, wondering around the building aimlessly until he was released. He walked out of the building holding the paper in his hand. He stared down at it, with an unreadable expression.

"Did you get in?" I asked hopeful. But he sighed and handed me the paper.

I took the paper into my hands and examined it, and as usual the familiar letters 4F were stamped in the designated box. A slight frown fell onto my face as I read the form.

"Nobody wants to be the one who ships off a sick boy to the army, I guess." He spoke glumly.

I peered over at him and then back down at the piece of paper before handing it back to him. To which he took it and neatly placed it into his jacket pocket.

"Whatever you do, don't give up Steve." I told him and he replied with a quirky remark and a smirk.

"Who said I was?"

I let out a small laugh and smiled, glad this wasn't getting to him. Or at least I hope it's not. Maybe he is deep down but don't just want me to worry, although no matter what I will worry.

"Want me to walk with you to work?" He asked me.

I gave a nod in reply. Knowing he would walk with me no matter what I say.

He interlocked his frail arm with mine and we began to walk towards my work. Where I'd have to succumb to the usual buzz of the customers and forget about the troubles that I have.

As I was sweeping the floors of the diner, getting ready for closing time the bell above the door chimed signaling an arriving customer.

"I hope it's not too late to get a cup of coffee." The all so familiar voice spoke.

My head turned and looked in the direction of the door and Bucky was standing beside Steve with a grin on his face. He was clad in uniform and held a perfect posture.

"Buck?!" I asked surprised and rushed over to him.

He engulfed me into his arms in a friendly hug. It was quite the bare hug but considering he had been away for almost a year, I guess he just couldn't resist. I couldn't resist either, I swear it felt like it's been forever since we last seen each other.
