Hope to Despair

Our eyes widened in shock as we arrived at the town center to see 7 people standing there, with my dad and Konju's parents tied to a pole each.

I motioned for Konju to follow me, so we both hid behind a bench as we watched the group.

"Mou~ Tomako, didn't you say they would be here an hour ago?~" One of the masked people asked the guy who I believe to be the leader.

He sighed, "Dekane, I never guaranteed the exact time of their arrival. I cannot predict that."

"But you're a Fate Changer! How can you not know?!" Dekane protested.

I looked at Konju, disbelief coursing through my veins, as both of us digested the information.

"He's a Fate Changer too?..." I mumbled under my breath.

"I-I can't believe it.... B-But then again, that would explain how the Dark Balancers knew of Undiscovered Natures..." Konju agreed.

"I have to agree with Dekane for once. Time is a-wasting, and we shouldn't spend too much time in this town," a nasal voice sounded out from Dekane's right.

"I get it, Akeu, but until we get the Fluctuation Artefact, we can't go anywhere," Tomako replied.

"But Kugewa and Hieru are taking WAY too long..." another one interjected.

"We needed to save our energy, Kureri. Plus, I trust them. They are good trackers, especially if it's a Borrowed Actor they're tracking down."

"True..." Kureri nodded.

"What about that kid who's the wielder of the Fluctuation Artefact?" Another one asked Tomako while aiming a gun at Dad, causing me to growl a bit.

"Patience is a virtue, Gerna. Kin Aruke will join us, whether he likes it or not."

"My son would never join you horrible people!" It was then that Dad chose to interject. "He's smart and knows what's right or wrong!"

"Maybe. But his morals will be put to the test when it comes to choosing between the people he loves and the destruction of the world," The figure who had a gun aimed towards Konju's mom's head shot back.

The other 6 all clapped politely.

"As expected from Reiko," Gerna noted.

"Thank you," Reiko bowed.

"You're all delusional if you think that Aruke and Konju would go over to your side," Konju's dad spoke up. It was soft, yet anyone could hear the dangerous icy edge to it.

Kureri chuckled, "Well the kid was always weak when it came to his loved ones."

"And that shall be exploited today," The man who was holding Konju's dad hostage smirked.

"I agree with Queru," Tomako grinned like a wolf, and the 7 of them gave off hyena laughs.

Okay, by then, I was already super terrified. They knew that I was weak when it came to my loved ones, and they were going to recruit me using that.

I can't let the Fluctuation Artefact fall into their hands! I can't! One part of me was really worried about the multiverse.

But if I don't join them, they'll do something horrible to my dad and Konju's parents! The other side was worried for my family and friends.

You know those times in your life when you're faced with a decision which will end badly either way?

Yeah, that was my predicament at that moment.

And boy, was I torn.

What do I do what do I do what do I do what do I do what do I do what do I do what do I do what do I do?!  My breathing grew unstable, and my eyes flashed blue as I gripped my fists, trying to get a grip, ANY grip, on reality. I could vaguely hear Konju's words of "comfort", but it was incoherent. Blurry. I couldn't hear it that well.

I don't want to lose anyone!

I gripped my fists tightly, the brief pain enough to snap me out of my trance.

Alright, calm down, Aruke. Panicking will not solve anything. We have to think of a plan-

One formed in the blink of an eye. I blinked in shock. H-Huh?...

However, I didn't stay too long on that, "Konju, I have a plan, but we'll have to be quick."

Konju's eyes widened, "Really?"

I nodded as I took the Fluctuation Artefact out of my pocket, giving it to Konju, "Run as soon as I say so as far away as you can. I'll hold them off while I still can."

"What?!" his eyes widened in shock. "No! I can't do that!"

"Oh yes, you will!" I trained my eyes on his. "Konju, you're the multiverse's only hope against the Dark Balancers-"

"Not anymore," the two of us froze hearing that oh-so-familiar voice, slowly turning just in time to see Kugewa and Hieru grab our shirts and drag us, to the group.

Of course, our noise attracted them, so they turned over just as Hieru and Kugewa made us go to our knees, the Fluctuation Artefact falling to the ground.

Tomako's eyes widened, before they lit up like a kid who just got what they wanted for Christmas, "Well, well, well, well, well, well, well! If it isn't Kin Aruke and Konju Rudi!"

"ARUKE!" "KONJU!" our parents shouted out, shock and worry lacing their tones.

"Oh shut up, you 3!" Dekane snapped at them, which immediately quieted them down.

"Hey! Don't tell my dad to shut up!" I growled at him, only for Hieru to slap my face, causing me to fall to the ground.

"You are truly annoying, Kin Aruke," Hieru grabbed my shirt and pulled me close to him. "You dare insult our Fate Changer when you're nothing but a peasant. Someone who doesn't have the right to even be with us. You should be honoured."

"You're wrong! That guy isn't the Fate Changer! At least not anymore!" Konju struggled to get away from Kugewa, but that guy kept his grip on him.

"Shut up!" Kugewa kicked Konju to kneel in front of Tomako, who elegantly walked to him and grabbed Konju's head after taking the Fluctuation Artefact.

"My, my, you seem to be quite the rebellious spirit, Konju Rudi," he noted with this arrogant smirk that made me want to punch him.

Konju met his gaze head-on, "I've been told that many times by villains, Tomako."

"Ah..." he smirked. "Let's see if that rebellious spirit is still there soon." His eyes glowed grey as he stared at Konju.

At first, there was no reaction, but suddenly, Konju screamed in pain, "IT HURTS! IT HURTS SO MUCH!"

"Konju!" I shouted, and I kicked Hieru away before I rushed to help Konju.

However, just as I arrived, Konju's body posture suddenly stiffened, and Kugewa let him go, a satisfied smile on his face.

"K-Konju?..." I trailed off, my eyes slowly widening in horror as Konju turned around to reveal 2 milky white irises staring at me.

"Ahahahhahahhahahahhahahahhahahahhahahahhahahahha!" Tomako burst out cackling like a madman. "Konju Rudi is GONE! GONE, I say! In his place, there is only our newest recruit!"

"What are your orders, Master?" Konju asked him robotically, making me back away even more out of fear and terror.

His next order sent shivers down my spine.

"Destroy Kin Aruke."
