chapter 17: even more memories
dedication: shawn mendes for being the most perfect human being to ever release his breath into the air

Mary's POV
I gulped and stared at Raine while she read the piece of paper in her head. Then she says, "Oh, we can't do this memory because none of us were a part of it." and she tosses it back into the jar.
I let out a relieved breath. I decide to not even ask what the memory was. Cameron doesn't want me to know, and maybe it's a good thing they aren't doing that memory. I still really want to know what it is though.
"Ooh, yay!" Raine yells excitedly after she read another slip of paper. "I love this memory."
"What is it?" I ask.
"Memory eighteen, it's when we all jumped into the lake around midnight."

Memory 18: Midnight Swim
"C'mon Mary!" Raine urges Mary, who was standing on the dock fully clothes while everyone else was stripping down to just their underwear.
Her cheeks flushed when she noticed Raine was only in her bra and underwear. Nash and the Jacks had already jumped into the lake, their clothes lying in a pile by Mary's feet.
"Mary, it'll be fine." Cameron speaks softly to his best friend but she shakes her head. She thought Cameron would understand.
Mary was insecure. Cameron was supposed to get that.
She noticed Raine and Diana share a look. They both shrugged, holding their boyfriend's hands and jumping into the lake with a scream of laughter.
Cameron grabs Mary's hand. "Wanna jump in?"
"Not really." she whispers back to him. Shawn overhears everything and he frowns, hopping back onto the dock. He's dripping wet and now freezing as he walks over to the two of them.
"I'm freezing. I'm gonna go back inside, wanna come Mary?"
Mary sighs in relief. Of course she would rather be with Cam, but she didn't want to be pressured into taking her clothes off in front of everyone and jumping into the lake right now. She nodded and walked with Shawn.
Cameron tried not to act like it was a big deal, even though he knew it was.
Mary and Shawn walked up to Matt's house together. He lived right behind the lake, so that's how the idea came about to go for a swim.
"You know you shouldn't be so insecure," Shawn speaks in a soft tone, glancing at Mary as they walked. "You're perfect."
"Nobody is perfect."
"True, but everybody has an opinion. My opinion is that you're perfect. That's what you are in my eyes."
Mary doesn't know what to say after that.

Mary's POV
I don't think any of them understand the whole reason I'm being told the memories. None of them explain any detail from the night, they just laugh and say things like "remember when" this happened and "that was so funny when" that happened, and I have no clue what's going on.
She wanted to say something, but she couldn't bring herself to speak.
"Let's do number nine next!" Diana suggests after clapping her hands together. Her hair wasn't in her usual tight curls, it was now straightened and it looked really good. She was beautiful, and so was Raine, making me feel boring and plain.
"Oh, I remember that." Blonde Jack scoffs and rolls his eyes. "That was when you guys dragged us to that One Direction concert."
"Who's One Direction?" I ask.
"This is so sad." Diana says.

Memory #9: One Direction Concert
"This is gonna be so fun!" Diana cheers when they reach the back of the line.
"Yeah, waiting in line for hours seems so fun." Cameron says sarcastically. Mary giggles which causes him to smile.
"It won't take that long." Raine says.
Raine and Diana were the fans of One Direction. And Matthew was a pretty big fangirl himself, he just wouldn't say it out loud.
Cameron didn't care for them but he didn't complain about coming. Mary was excited but scared of all the people she would be around. She liked One Direction; just not as much as her two friends. Aaron and Matt came to make their girlfriends happy, and the Jacks were dragged here because there were two extra tickets, and neither Shawn or Matt could come.
Raine was right, they weren't in line for very long and soon they were finding their seats on the floor. They got a great deal for these tickets because "Raine knows people."
The eight of them just took selfies and talked and laughed and waited almost an hour until 5 Seconds of Summer finally came out. After that, they waited again and One Direction came out.
The night went better than Mary expected. She had so fun and Cameron just enjoyed watching her have a good time. He also enjoyed the concert, he'll admit, but nothing could beat seeing that smile on Mary's face.

Mary's POV
Diana then played a song by One Direction, and I just listened without saying anything.
I just wanted Cameron to come back. These people suck at the job he's supposed to do.
