Chapter Nine An Oath

Gabe sat in the bushes near the stairs and waited. He saw Clementine come running down the stairs and look around for him, "Gabe? Gabe!" She called out, there was fear and worry in her voice.

Gabe didn't move. After a minute of looking around Clem sadly went back into the school, feeling terrible that she had probably hurt Gabe and hoping he wasn't too upset. 'He can't of left the school, he must be hiding somewhere out there...but he doesn't want to come out...' She thought as she approached her room.

Gabe sighed in the bushes...'What the fuck just happened in there?...', He asked himself, he felt shaken and miserable, "Clem and Louis...they-they...shit...I guess she has changed....I have been gone a long time...she apparently moved on..." Gabe put his head in his hands, he still couldn't believe it!

"Shake it off, Gabe! You should be happy for her!" A part of his brain said.

"I guess I should be...but I'm not! I loved her! But she-she doesn't love me...",Gabe answered it hopelessly.

"Stay the course, Gabe! Finish the mission then...then...then you-..." His brain tried to think of a purpose beyond that but it failed, leaving Gabe completely hopeless.

"Just....finish the mission...",His brain said sadly as Gabe huddled his body together in the bush and tried to sleep. He couldn't....

"Hey, have you seen Gabe, Vi?" Clem asked Violet the next morning over breakfast. Clem hadn't slept well from worry about Gabe.

"Not since last night, why?" Violet asked,worried about what could of happened last night. Louis had said he was going to talk to Clementine and he hadn't talked to her since.

"Nothing...if you see him, would you please let me know?" Clem said, her worry increasing.

"Who is it you're looking for?" Assim asked sitting down next to Clementine.

"Gabe. Have you seen him?" Clem asked hopefully.

"Yeah actually, I saw him crawling over the gate this morning. He said he wanted to go hunting or something." Assim said,not worried at all.

"Thanks, Assim." Clem said,feeling a little better that Gabe had turned up.

"Yep...he said he wanted everyone to do their jobs and that he'd be back at noon to discuss plans." Assim said.

"That's good. Me and Gabe still had a few final details to work out." Violet said getting up from the table. She sighed, "But that's means I got watch for the whole morning...Oh,well." She shrugged and left.

Louis took a seat where Violet had been sitting and he didn't look at Clem. He wasn't sure how to feel about last night but he had decided that if Clementine liked him he would let her make the first move. They finished their breakfast in silence...

The morning passed with the teenagers bored and on edge. Nobody had anything to do anymore and dread about the upcoming adventure was settling in. Most of them were sitting on the table, looking glum and not talking to each other. Clementine was pacing nervously. She hadn't realized how much Gabe being gone would affect her, all she could think about was him. 'Fuck! I hope he's doing alright....I know Louis being with me probably looked bad but Gabe will understand that I still have feelings for him right?...Oh, Shit! No he won't! I-I never told him,did I? Ok, Clem calm down...when he gets back I'll...I'll tell him...I bet that was what he wanted to talk about last night! I knew it felt like a date, like that one night by the lake...' She thought of that happy night wistfully for a minute before resuming her pacing, 'C'mon Gabe, Just get back here...'
