Chapter Ten The Calm Before...

Gabe woke to the tweeting of birds the next morning with Clem laying next to him and his arms around her. He laid in Clem's bed and smiled at her sleeping face, he didn't think of the danger they'd be in tomorrow or worry about would could happen. He was with her at last and anything else barely mattered. He laid there for a long time, just soaking in the happiness of being with Clementine.

AJ soon got out of bed and left the room quietly, not wanting to wake Clem and Gabe. With his back to him,AJ didn't realize Gabe was awake. He was glad that Gabe had finally told Clem and that they were happy. AJ liked Gabe, he was nice, tough, and dependable. 'I can see why Clem likes him.' He thought entering the courtyard to find Violet and Louis.

Clementine woke up a few minutes after AJ left and Gabe said, "Good morning....beautiful." He said after a pause(he had been trying to find a good,affectionate term). He brushed a strand of hair off her face to the side of her head and she smiled.

"You're not so bad yourself." Clem said ruffling his hair affectionately before climbing over him and out of bed.

"Well, I'd prefer to think of myself as tough but if you-if you think that- I'm-" Gabe stammered, He was trying to be charming but he had no idea what the hell he was doing.

Clem looked back at him and shook her head, a smile on her face, "Gabe, you're still a huge dork,you know. But I honestly like it, it makes you seem more....genuine. I feel like it's a part of your personality, I can't imagine you without it."

"Well if it doesn't bother you..." Gabe said getting off the bed in relief, he was uncomfortable trying to 'sweet talk' or whatever Javi had called it when he had asked him tips for getting a girlfriend. It just didn't seem appealing to Gabe, he just wanted to say what she meant to him, he didn't see the point of fancy words and throwing empty praise around. "Not that Clem isn't beautiful! I meant that but....whatever, let's just get moving." He thought with a quick sigh as walked with Clem out the bedroom door.

They entered the courtyard to find Violet and Louis sharing a cup of coffee and chatting. AJ was drawing at the table. "It finally feels like a real home." Gabe said, holding Clem's hand and looking at the happy group present outside.

"It does. It's our home." She said giving Gabe's hand a squeeze and smiling at his happy face.

He nodded and they walked down to Louis and Violet.

"Oh, Good morning! My trusted comrades and friends, are you ready for this day?" Louis asked grandly with a mock bow.

"Louis, we haven't even been up for and hour and you're already starting." Violet said,with a shake of her head and a weak smile.

"Hey, there's always time to be funny, especially now when everyone needs it." Louis responded drinking the last of his coffee.

"Is that smart?" AJ asked suddenly. He was staring at Louis, "I tried coffee once...it's disgusting and makes your head fuzzy and excited...should Louis drink that? I mean,he's already silly."

Clem laughed and Gabe grinned widely while Violet snorted, "No, he probably shouldn't be drinking coffee." Clem said, looking at Louis with a smirk.

"Too late!" He said,grinning before he walked inside the school.

Violet shook her head at him and offered Clem a cup of coffee which she accepted.

"Oh, uh...Violet?" Gabe said remembering he still owned Violet an apology as Clem sipped her coffee, "I wanted to say I'm sorry...about the other day...I was out of hand and you didn't deserve that." He said,remembering him slamming her to the ground.
