Florence couldn't stop her eyes from rolling. She sighed harshly and moved to the side of the boat closest to the jetty.
"Listen here, whoever you are, hiding out there, I don't care what you've been waiting for. This is getting tiresome. My friend has some questions for the Vainsteor, we were told they might be here. So tell us where they are and none of us will have to waste our time on this silly game you think we're going to play."
Skyrah and Quentin moved to join her. They stared out to the cavern beyond, it appeared to be empty but the voices had to have come from somewhere.
"We know why you are here, Skyrah of Gwilong. You sought us out to answer your questions. That we shall, in good time."
Florence frowned out at the cavern as a whole, "Show yourself!"
"We are already here, Florence James."
And with that, a collection of the balls of light circled closer to the boat, forming a line in front of them. Florence's brow arched in disbelief, side glancing at Quentin and Skyrah, who didn't seem to believe it anymore than she did.
"You're trying to tell me, that you're the Vainsteor? Balls of light?"
The balls bobbed up and down, and Florence got the amusing impression that it was something akin to nodding.
"We are not 'balls of light', as you say, we are sentient beings of power, from a time long ago. We transcended our corporeal bodies, seeking enlightenment and the fulfillment of peace and prosperity."
Florence snorted, "You're not doing a very good job of that right now."
The colours in each of the balls changed to a slightly darker colour, Florence didn't know what that meant but it didn't seem like a good reaction.
"The Onslaught is not of our construction, we did not orchestrate these chain of events, though we know wh-"
The voices were suddenly cut off by three loud meows, suddenly all three cats jumped out of their bags. They landed on the edge of the boat and pawed at the balls of light, which bobbed upwards away from them.
Florence eyed her cats with concern and suspicion. "You three aren't supposed to be jumping around like that. What are you doing?"
There was a long pause, nobody made a sound and the only movements were the Vainsteor occasionally moving around. The moment lingered on and Florence could have sworn her cats were having some kind of silent conversation with the Vainsteor. She cleared her throat loudly and three feline heads turned to look at her.
"You three have a lot of explaining to do."
They mewed at her apologetically but she shook her head, she wasn't having that.
"Or maybe you can explain this to me," she aimed her statement at the lights.
"We can but we will not, it is not our tale to divulge... We understand."
The voices seemed to speak that last part towards the cats and Florence swore under her breath.
"This is ridiculous, you clearly understand my cats and I need to know what's going on."
The cavern fell momentarily silent, like a decision was being made. Quentin and Skyrah seemed to be staring between Florence, the cats and the Vainsteor, they looked as confounded as she felt.
"No, we will not. We will, however, answer the questions that brought you to us, Skyrah of Gwilong."
Skyrah turned in surprise, leaving Florence feeling like she'd been dismissed. She scowled at the Vainsteor, however she didn't interrupt, she wanted Skyrah to get the answers she needed.
