I look for the sun and head in its direction. I don't remember much about what they teach us at school but i do know that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and with that I lead the way, and everyone follows. We walk for about a mile east in silence until Amy speaks up.
"You guys I'm still not getting a signal." She says.
"We're probably too far away from a cell tower. If we keep walking, we should pick up a signal soon." Justin answers.
There was nothing but mountains, hills, and trees but we continued walking. The weather wasn't too brutal, as the sun set so did the temperature, and a light breeze crept in. We had walked for about 3 hours stopping only for about 10 to 20 minutes to rest when we came across a small empty garage. It looked like termites had eaten away years worth of wood from all sides and a rusty old beetle with no tires rested inside with a black plastic cover filled with fallen leaves, cobwebs and dust turned dirt.
"Okay, we can stop here, Wilkey and I will try get something to make a fire with." Samir says to everyone.
"No, one of you has to stay here, you can't leave us with him." Tianna looks at Justin before going to stand next to Samir.
"Wilkey lets go." I roll my eyes and grab Wilkey. Tianna seems a bit too happy about my choice.
I had to get away from everyone for a minute and collecting wood seemed like an emotionally stabilizing idea.
"You ok Wolf?" Wilkey asks.
"Yeah, I'm good, how much wood do you think we'll need?" I'm not good.
"Are you sure? You can talk to me you know." Wilkey seemed very sincere, but I wasn't in the right mind set at the moment.
"Yeah, but I'm fine."
"Ok well maybe like a few more. Then we can head back" I think he knows I'm not good too.
After collecting the wood, we needed we started heading back to the group. I think Wilkey wanted to talk to me but my vibe that night was hostile, so we walked back in silence.
"Where's Amy?" I asked Tianna.
"Rep thought she could find us some grub." She replied. I nod and place the wood down. "Hey be honest, what do you think of Wilkey's friend, Sammy? Hot right."
"I don't know him." She is not wrong, but it doesn't really matter what I think. I hurry off before she can ask any more flustering questions.
We are all exhausted from walking. When Amy comes back with only a few fruits, berries and nuts we all sit in a circle while Wilkey starts making the fire. Night falls and everyone is quiet. I guess we were all in our own train of thought.
"Hey, I have an idea, let's do that 'we all go in a circle and say a few things about ourselves' thing." Wilkey breaks the silence.
"Why?" Tianna asks.
"Because we are literally all strangers that somehow just met today. Even though most of us go to the same school. Which is ridiculous." Wilkey explains but no one replies. "Come on, it'd be nice to know who exactly is saving the world with me. Or we can continue to awkwardly stare at each other in complete silence." Wilkey looks at me, but I break eye contact. "Fine I'll go first. Hi!" He waves excitedly to everyone. "My name is Wilkey Evans, I'm currently 17 years of age, 18 in a month," He winks. "I go to Crestwood high and I love to make our dear old principles career a living hell." Everyone laughs. "Any questions?"
"Yeah, why are you such a menace?" Amy asks. "I mean like don't you think it gets old?"
"Its called having fun." Tianna interrupts. "I mean like don't you think snitching gets old?" She mocks. "Not to mention annoying."
"You think it's so easy being me, just dob on anyone insight, right? You think I don't know everyone in school hates me?" Amy's voice raises.
"If you know then why do you keep being a watch dog? Why do you keep snitching? What, are you like an undercover teacher or something, or do you just have something against us? More importantly me." Tianna replies.
"Shut up, stop acting like you're the victim here, you have no heart, all you do is put people down to bring your image up, you think that's "pretty"? Huh?" Amy's starts to crack.
"Amy..." Justin tries to calm her down and she takes in a deep breath.
"No lets here your story "princess"." Amy shouts, Tianna rolls her eyes but doesn't reply, and the silence lingers.
"Anyone else feel like opening up?" Wilkey tries to break the awkwardness again.
"I might as well, since I know no one. Umm hi, my name is Samir but everyone calls me Sammy, I go to St. Lucious, I'm 18 and I live alone with my little brother." Sammy introduces himself.
"No parents?" I don't even know why I just asked that.
"Yeah, mum died, dad's MIA." He tries to say it as if it's no big deal. "That's why Wilkey and I are so close, most of my childhood, his mum took care of us. We're basically brothers."
"So why did you move out?" Justin asks.
"I got to an age where I could finally take care of myself and my little brother." He answers.
"What 12?" Tianna asks.
"16." Sammy chuckles.
"Must have one hell of a job then." She adds but Sammy doesn't reply, I think he is done talking about himself.
"How bout you stranger?" Tianna asks me. "What's your story." I look at everyone and they all seem very intrigued but what the heck.
"Hi, my name is Rein..."
"Your name is rain?" Amy interrupts.
"As in the weather?" Tianna interrupts.
"How come I never knew that?" Justin interrupts. I don't know why but I'm vexed.
"Because you never asked and we're not exactly friends Justin." Only a bit of frustration loitered in my tone. "We've been walking for literally hours, we've been in the same classes for the past 4 years, I mean I know Sammy's excuse but the rest of you, we're not exactly friends are we." Everyone had a sort of sorry/guilty look. "It's cool, anyways, yeah my name is Rein and I'm still 17, I'm a girl..."
"Really." Tianna smirks.
"No questions." I end my turn and again a silence lingers. "Anyways, I'm calling it, Night." I get up leave for the garage.
"Wait my name is Justin..." Justin attempts to keep it going.
"Tell me something I don't know." Tianna follows and leaves behind me.
"Hey, come on I didn't have my turn." Justin again attempts to keep the activity going.
"Justin we all know who you are." Wilkey and Sammy laugh as they follow behind Tianna.
