The next week when Xavier went to school, he found that his friends were talking about a supposed new girl that was going to be at school that day.
"I hope she's hot!" Xavier's best friend Dylan was saying.
"I bet she will be!" Tyler agreed.
"What are you guys talking about?" Xavier asked them as he walked to them and put his backpack in his locker.
"Didn't you hear? There's supposed to be a new girl coming to school today!" Tyler told Xavier.
"Oh, I didn't know that! When is she going to be here?"
"Any minute now! I can't wait to meet her! I bet she's gonna be really cute!" Dylan replied.
The boys kept talking about the new girl until the school's front doors opened and a girl walked in. She had blue eyes and orange hair with black tips. Xavier was the first to notice her as she walked past them, not even paying any attention to them.
"Whoa...that must be the new girl!" Dylan gasped.
"Wow...I knew she'd be cute, but I never expected her to look like that!" Tyler added.
Xavier stood silently as the new girl looked around, seeming a bit lost.
"She looks like she's lost. I should go try to help her." Xavier decided, walking over to the girl and getting her attention. "Hey, are you lost? Want me to help you find your way around?"
"Oh, uh, sure I guess." the girl agreed.
"Okay! Oh, and my name is Xavier, by the way." Xavier continued. "What's your name?"
"I'm Shyla. Nice to meet you, Xavier." Shyla replied, pushing her hair out of her face, although it fell right back in front of her eye.
"Come on, I'll take you to the office so you can get your schedule and locker number. Follow me."
Xavier took Shyla to the office while Dylan and Tyler stayed behind, still talking about Shyla.
When Xavier and Shyla came into the office, the principal greeted them instantly.
"Hello Xavier. How may I help you today?" the principal looked over at Shyla. "Oh, Ms. Burton. I've been expecting you."
The principal opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a couple of papers. "Here, take these. They're your schedule, locker number, and locker combination. There's also a pass for you, since I'm assuming Xavier's here to show you around, so if you're late to class, just give the pass to your teacher and they'll understand."
"Okay! Thank you, Principal James!" Xavier smiled. He looked at Shyla. "Let's go."
Xavier spent the entire school day with Shyla, showing her around the school and even sitting with her at lunch instead of sitting with his friends. Tyler and Dylan started to notice a change in Xavier the more time he spent with Shyla. He seemed to really enjoy her company. One night, Xavier even brought Shyla home with him to meet his dad.
"Hey, Dad. I want you to meet my new friend from school. This is Shyla." Xavier told Bristol.
"Oh, hi Shyla! It's nice to meet you. I'm Xavier's dad Bristol."
"It's nice to meet you too." Shyla replied. "Your son is really nice. I feel very lucky to have a friend like him. My old friends were never as nice as Xavier."
"That's very sweet." Bristol smiled. He looked at the time. "Shyla, would you like to stay for dinner? We're having chicken tonight."
"Oh, I wish I could, but I don't think my parents would let me. They're very strict about whose houses I'm allowed to have dinner at." Shyla replied. "Thanks for the offer, though. I'm gonna get going home so I don't get in trouble for staying out."
"That's fine. I'll see you tomorrow, Shyla!" Xavier smiled and waved as Shyla left.
Late that night, Xavier was wide awake, thinking about Shyla. She was such a great friend, but Xavier wondered if they could be more than that. He almost picked up his phone to call her, but remembered how late it was and stopped himself, knowing Shyla probably wouldn't answer the phone at this hour.
"I wonder what she thinks of me...maybe she feels the same way...I guess the only way to find out is to ask her." Xavier said to himself. "Yeah, I'll do that. When I see her tomorrow, I'll ask her what she thinks of me."
With his plan decided, Xavier yawned, rolled over, and went back to sleep, dreaming about Shyla.
