Chapter 20
Date: May 1st
Location: Charles Holding Cell
Time: 12:01 p.m.
The guard left shortly after he gave his last words of encouragement and I was now left on my own. Well not on my own considering that the three guards were still standing there but it felt like I was alone.
It will be like this in the end. You standing here, waiting for your death, all alone.
The words danced in my head and I shoved them back in a dark corner. Now wasn’t the time to panic; I had time for that earlier.
I took the first step.
Inside I was trembling in fear, but on the outside I walked calmly towards one of the FBI’s most wanted man. Who would have known that when I wanted something interesting to happen in my life, all of this would happen? Note to self; never wish for anything ever again.
The room was white, like ‘I just died and went to heaven’ white. As I cringed lightly at the harshness of the room I didn’t slow my stride towards the man I hadn’t seen in what felt like years, but was only half a year ago.
Michael sat in the middle of the room wearing a soft blue jail uniform. He looked comfortable, healthy, and a lot better than the last time I had seen him.
There was a lone table that stood out in the white room only because it was silver. Michael had his hands chained to the table and his legs chained to the chair which was bolted to the ground.
He looked at me and smiled. Even with him locked up I wanted to tuck tail and run. This man, who had caused so many problems for me, who chased me across the world, was 10 feet away from me. I couldn’t deny my emotions.
“Hello, Dr. Smith.” To an onlooker one might suspect he was just greeting someone, but I knew that that wasn’t the case. He was thrilled that I was here, that I needed his help; it made him feel powerful again.
“Hello, Michael.” I sat down in the stiff chair across from him trying to keep my cool.
Even with the mask, wig, colored contacts, and makeup, I felt like he could see right through everything. Knowing him he probably could.
I pulled a notebook, pen, and my phone out of my purse before setting it to the side. I had no idea what psychologists do when they are talking to an insane person but I guess taking notes would be in order.
“The guards aren’t listening in Michael, so I urge you to speak freely.” I altered my speech a little bit, just in case.
“Now, do you really believe that?”
No, I didn’t, which is why when I placed my phone on the table I put on a very familiar app that I was fortunate to have downloaded earlier. It messed with the sound frequency; the guards would have to physically hear what we were talking about in the room seeing as the mini mics scattered across the room wouldn’t be working.
“Yes.” My eyes glanced down to the phone and he followed my gaze. “I do.”
“Old habits die hard, don’t they?” He was mocking me and he was the one in chains.
“I need your help,” I started.
“Why else would you be here?” He asked dryly. “I doubt it was to check how I was doing in this place. I’m fine by the way.”
