“What?” Fran asked confused by my request.
“I need the instructions to make EHID,” I repeat and look to Iris almost desperately. “Please.”
“I’ll get it. “She ran to her room while I was left with accusing gazes of the others.
“I thought you destroyed the instructions,” Matt said softly. “Did you lie to us?”
“Yes.” And while I was supposed to feel a pit of regret naw at my stomach I felt nothing but ease and contempt.
“Why?!” He yelled at me and I almost recoiled in shock at his change in demeanor. “Aura the last time you made that thing it almost exposed everything we worked for. Why in the fucking world would you want to make another one?”
“I would fix the bugs, it’s the only way,” I stated as Iris came back in and tossed me the necklace and the others stared at it like it was a piece of meat and they were the dogs.
“This is a bad decision,” Fran said.
“It doesn’t matter is the decision is good or bad anymore, what matters is if it gets the job done.” I turn around and start to head back towards my office not wanting to waist a moment of opportunity.
“Don’t turn your back on me,” Fran’s voice was cold and calculating and I only turned half back around to see what else she had to say. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
“You didn’t need to know.”
“And who are you to decide that?” She asked icily. “In case you had forgotten Aura it was us who came to you with this idea of taking Lockstar down, not the other way around, don’t act like you are the one running things.”
“Why shouldn’t I?” I ask back. “Since the day who has been the one getting us out of danger? Getting things done? Calling the shots? In case you have forgotten you put me in this role, not the other way around.” I cringe at my cruel demeanor. “This will have nothing on us, no previous information, and if by the off chance this does get exposed I’ll be taking the fall, not the other way around.”
“Why won’t you let us help you?” Fran questions taking a small step forward. “We’re all in this mess together, you don’t have to do things alone.”
But that’s where she was wrong. Every time someone attempted to help me they got hurt and I wasn’t about to let that happen again. I could put on the brave face for a period of time to calm them down but when they would still be kept in the dark, it was the only safe option.
It will be like this in the end. You standing here, awaiting your death, all alone.
I was now beginning to realize how true those words were and that I needed to get over my fear of being on my own. No one else needed to get dragged into my mess.
“Bye.” I said in a short voice and left to head back to my office. No one followed me.
All alone.
But at least it would be the end.
