Chapter 32
Date: June 28th
Location: Office at Guardian Base
Time: 10:59 a.m.
“They’re fine,” Iris reassured me for the billionth time this week. “Would you stop worrying, it’s really getting on my nerves.”
“I can’t,” I murmured carefully putting a small tracking device in the object. “They were supposed to be here 3 days ago.”
“And complications came up,” She countered before I could go on my rant again. “They are staying at the base in Sicily, they’re fine.”
“Sorry,” I sighed looking up from my work for a moment. “It’s just with my track record people I usually care about at this point in time end up getting killed.” At that part I turned a little sour.
Valentin and the others had left for Agrigento a little over a week ago to pick up the locations, otherwise known as the information everyone was killing themselves after. They were supposed to arrive three days ago, I had waited by the door like a love sick fool and panicked when they never showed up.
Apparently there was bad weather rolling around and their flight couldn’t leave, I called that bullshit. If they wanted to lie to someone they could have picked something that was harder to figure out then going on weather.com.
I looked back down at the object and continued my work while Iris played with random objects in the room.
“They have V with them, not to mention your parents as well and your sister and our friends who can all kick major ass. If anyone was going to attack them they are pretty damn stupid.”
“You’re right,” I sighed finally getting the object into place. “Can you get me the core?”
“What’s that look like again?” She asks and I don’t shift my eyes from the current task at hand.
“It looks like a big silver block.” I held out my gloved hand and waited until I felt the weight of the device drop in my hand. “Okay, test 28, subject 3.2, time 11 a.m.”
“Is that really necessary?” Iris asks quietly and I can almost feel her crossing her arms at me.
“I want to keep a record.” My hands were shaking and my breath was unsteady. “Fingers crossed.”
My hands stilled by the time I placed the object in place and considering nothing blew up this time I considered it a moderate success so far. Bringing the magnifying glass over the object I grabbed a pair of tweezers and went to get to work on connecting the small wires.
Green to purple, white to black, so on and so forth. I made sure that this version was even more difficult to figure out considering more people knew about it now. The process took a few strenuous minutes but after the wires were connected I heard a small hum. I almost fainted in shock.
“Was that,” Iris started to say before I shushed her.
“The plate,” I didn’t even get the last word out before she placed it in my hands.
I attached the plate to the core seeing the similar three holes for the dots to light up in them. Once it was connected I heard another surge of energy before all of them lit up at once.
“Holy shit, it works, it works, it works.” Iris started freaking out and pacing in the small room.
“Relax,” I said but was on the verge of freaking out as well. “We haven’t put it in the case yet.”
