Chapter 38
STATUS UNKNOWN……
It was dark and cold and I felt something undeniably itchy press against my skin. My chest still hurt, almost unbearably so but I pushed the physical pain aside to assess my situation.
Was this what death was like?
I suppose I expected to feel no pain and it to be bright. I shivered and my hands brushed against a wall. My fingers twitched again and I felt a smooth surface, I could guess it was wood.
I blinked my eyes open and saw nothing but the black darkness that surrounded me. There was something on my face, pumping something into my lungs. A couple pinches were felt along my arm, medicine maybe.
I tried sitting up but could only go up a fraction of an inch before something tugged me back down. Now I was getting worried.
I couldn’t move, I couldn’t see and it felt like something else was breathing for me.
I closed my eyes and breathed deeply and could feel the pain in my chest resurface, it wasn’t as bad now, more numb but still present in my mind.
Where am I?
It felt like it was a few hours later but in reality was probably only minutes when I heard voices outside. My heart beat increased and I struggled to get out of my bonds, out of my cage, but found it to be useless.
I was trapped. After everything that had happened I was back to being trapped. Maybe I was going to hell and this was going to be my punishment.
I heard the voices grow nearer and strained to hear what they were saying but it was muffled.
“I can’t believe this worked.” One of them seemed to say. “You sure no one followed us?”
“Yeah, everyone thinks they’re gone.” The other one replied and I heard something thump above me. “At least for now.”
“You think they’re going to come back?” I started to hear scratching above me and my body tensed in anticipation. “After everything that’s happened?”
“If I know one thing I know Aura isn’t going to just hole up somewhere for the rest of her life.” The other answered and I heard another scratch before a loud bang and light started to filter through. “Did they really need to bolt these things?”
“We had to make it look realistic.” Another bang and more light. “Okay on the count of three, one, two, three.” They grunted and soon the barrier above me was taken away and bright light filtered in.
I flinched back in whatever I was in as my senses started picking up my surroundings. I was in a box with a mask to my face that was pumping in oxygen, the needle in my arm was helping my heart rate slow so I wouldn’t need to take much air. I was in the middle of a room.
I blinked my eyes open slowly allowing my sight to let me become aware to what was happening. As soon as they were open I noticed two things. One Iris and Kyle were standing with crowbars in their hands, two I was in a coffin.
Not one of those fake or cheap kinds either, like a coffin that would cost a couple grand. That was a little unnerving.
“She’s alive!” Iris cheered and took the needle out of me and unbound me from the coffin bed. Once my hands were free I took off the mask and sat up.
My head spun for a moment before finding its center.
“What happened?” My voice sounded hoarse.
“Before or after Levi shot you?” Kyle asked.
“After.” I shifted in my seat and while part of me wanted to get out of here the other part didn’t want to move.
