He was on fire again.
Jungkook thrashed, crying out, but there was no end to it. The smoke rose, choking him, smothering him as the panic filled his lungs. He swept a hand through it, trying to wave it away, and thought he saw Soomin standing a little ways away, smiling as the flames licked up around them.
"No one will come to save you," Soomin said. "I'm your only option. You'll come back to me."
Jungkook shook his head, stumbling back, pulling his arms up to shield his face and screaming as the flames leapt around him. He heard it breaking and disappearing, and he began to cry.
"Come back to me," Soomin repeated.
Jungkook shook his head, pressing his hands over his ears.
"Come back to me."
Jungkook let out a silent scream, falling to his knees.
"Come back to me."
"Jungkook!"
Jungkook jolted, eyes flying open, and let out a wild, panicked cry, pushing Taehyung away and falling off the bed. Taehyung followed him, kneeling beside him as Jungkook backed up against the wall, chest heaving, squeezing his eyes shut.
"Kook," Taehyung said softly, and Jungkook felt something inside him relax at the familiar nickname. He leaned forward, letting Taehyung pull him into his arms, reaching out to grip Taehyung's shirt in his hands. Taehyung began to sing softly, running a hand slowly up and down Jungkook's back and lying down on the floor. Jungkook let himself be lost in the tune, breaths slowing until all that remained of the panic was the shaky weakness in his body.
Taehyung let out a low hum as their breathing began to match, sitting up again and wrapping himself around Jungkook like a protective shield. Jungkook turned his head slightly and their eyes met.
"Will you be okay?" Taehyung asked.
Jungkook sighed, leaning against Taehyung's chest, and shrugged. He knew it wasn't just the nightmare. Taehyung and Yoongi had spent most of the previous night outlining the details of their newest mission to him, telling him it was their riskiest yet. They wanted to hack the broadcasting system in the center of anti territory and expose the population to music. Jungkook knew the next time he woke up they would be gone, and there was a high chance they wouldn't return. The antis wouldn't just let them get away with such a huge breach.
"We'll be back as soon as possible," Taehyung said, pressing a kiss to Jungkook's forehead. "Mingyu and Wonwoo will keep you safe until then."
Jungkook nodded, pressing himself closer to Taehyung and closing his eyes. Taehyung rocked him back and forth, humming under his breath.
"I'll miss you," he said.
Jungkook nodded.
"Will you miss me?" Taehyung asked. His voice was so soft Jungkook almost didn't catch it, but he pulled as close to Taehyung as he could, wrapping his arms around him and burying his face in his neck. Letting out a slow breath, he nodded.
"I love you, Kook," Taehyung said, even softer this time.
"I love you," Jungkook mouthed back, drifting off to sleep.
