“If you turn away from me right now, I promise to make myself scarce. You won’t see me anymore if that’s what you want. You won’t be bothered by my presence, by my existence.” He whispered, his lips hairsbreadth away from her lips.

Her body trembled partly in anticipation and mostly in fear of submission. He was attractive in many different ways, but a big part of her would not allow her to give in despite his desirability.

His hold on her nape was so light as if it was not even there, but she felt the warm and tingling sensation creep every inch of her skin. He was about to lean in for the kiss that had been a figment of their imagination for the most part of their time together.

Maggie did the unthinkable by pulling away from his grasp on her neck, stepping back a feet away from his warmth. Raising her head to gaze into his blue eyes, she found an amalgamation of disappointment, confusion and hurt.

Shaking her head, she gently said, “I’m sorry, I can’t, Damian.”

“I’ve never thought of you as a coward, Maggie.” Damian uttered with hoarseness evident in his deep voice.

“I guess you never really knew me that well.”

“You know that you have never allowed me to know you better.” He replied.

She remained quiet, not that she did not want to stoke that fire of hatred burning up inside him but because she just did not know what to say.

“I’ll keep my word, Maggie.”

“I know. You always have.”
