Beau

Damn, she can even make the shocked look cute. I wasn’t planning on running into Sawyer, especially being all sweaty from football practice.

“Are you stalking me Mr.Whitmore?” She says as a small laugh escapes her. That smile is beautiful. Even when we were kids, I loved to see her smile.

“Ha, very funny. You know the team always comes here before a game. Can’t expect us to play on empty stomachs ma’am. Therefore, you must be the one stalking me.” I flash her my most sincere smile. I can see the heat creeping up her cheeks. It’s nice to see I have the power to get that kind of response from her body. I wonder if she would turn red from head to toe if I actually touched her.

“Okay, you busted me. I’ve totally fallen head over heels in love with you Beau.” She rolls her eyes and continues to smile at me.

“Is it my charming personality that captured your heart, or my perfect butt?”

“Definitely the butt. I just can’t help myself. I’m an ass girl.” She shrugs her shoulders in a playful manner. We’re both smiling, a large chuckle bubbles up.

“So does that mean you chose me to go to the dance with?” I ask half jokingly half honestly. She averts her eyes to the ground.

“I’m not sure, I think I should give Zeek a chance. I don’t want you to give up your night just to save me. I should stand by my word to Zeek. He did ask first after all.” Her words send a pang to my heart. My ego is a little bruised, and I sense another feeling creeping up. Is that disappointment? I offered on the fly, but I did mean it. I wanted her to go with me.

“Sawyer, I really don’t mind. I’d rather spend the night dancing with a friend instead of some random chick.” Oh hell, I said that aloud. Another mental facepalm sets in.

“Let me think on it over the weekend and I’ll let you know Monday.” Her smile falters for only a second.

“Yeah, okay. Sounds good.” Before I know what I’m doing I step closer to her and place a kiss on her cheek. “Hope to see you at the game Ms.Thompson.” I walked away mentally yelling at myself. You kissed her cheek. That had to be the most awkward kiss of my life.

I enter Johnny J’s to find Sam and Gaylon with shit eating grins plastered on their faces. I shook my head at them. I’m usually a lot smoother than that. Something about Sawyer throws me off. I forget who I am when I look at her. My mind becomes blank and I struggle to find words to make sentences. This has never been an issue before. Then there’s the matter of that desperate kiss on the cheek. What was that? What the hell was I thinking? Right, I wasn’t. Well, couldn’t. Ughh.

Sam speaks first, he can’t help himself. “What the fuck was that bro?”

Gaylon chimes in, “Yeah, that was painful to watch.”

“Har, Har. Laugh it up douche canoes. She’s a little intimidating. We haven’t had a full conversation since were like 9.”

“You’re talking about that time on the playground when she kissed you and ran off? That was the last time you talked to her?” Sam snorts out another laugh.

“We’ve talked since, just not a full on conversation. Obviously I’m a little out of my element when it comes to her.” The fact that I mumble like an idiot when we do talk is proof of that.

Gaylon and Sam are roaring with laughter now. I roll my eyes. “Who are you taking to the dance Gaylon? Your hand wouldn’t look right in a formal dress.” Sam is still laughing. “What about you Sam, have you told Lucy you’re taking Madison to the dance yet?”

Sam puts his pointer finger to his lips and says, “SHHHHHhhhh! No one is supposed to know about us. If I had known you couldn’t keep your mouth shut about it I wouldn’t have told you.”

“Relax Sam. Gaylon knew before I did. He caught you two in the band's utility closet. She was stroking your trombone with her mouth. I’ve heard she’s quite the musician.” Gaylon and I let out a huge roar of laughter that hurt our stomach muscles. Sam is beat red with the appearance of defeat.

“Enough guys, we need to eat fast and get back to the school. Coach wants us warmed up and ready to go by 6.” We eat our meals and continue to shoot the shit all the way back to school. It’s time for my pregame playlist to get me pumped up for the game. Centuries by Fall Out Boy thrum through my earphones. I take in a deep breath. Once it’s out, I focus on the task at hand, winning this game.
