AFTER our chat, I pack my things and wait for you in the driveway. I'm in my short drawstring summer dress and black hi-cut sneakers. I put on a lip and cheek tint and let my straight dark hair down so it can freely flow with the wind. I make sure I would look pretty in your eyes when you see me.
You park your top-down Bumblebee Corvette next to where I stand. You're wearing Top Gun sunglasses and I must say you look cool in it even if you're wearing it for uncool reason. I know you're hiding evidence of sadness you don't want me to see.
"'Wag ka nang bumaba," I say when you opened your car door. I throw my sunflower-designed luggage at the backseat of your car and step over the passenger door like I'm crossing a backyard fence. You laugh.
"Bakit walang music?" I ask as I sit down. I turn your car audio on, play 'That's What You Get' by Paramore, and turn up the volume.
♪ No, Sir, I don't want to take the blame
Not anymore
I raise my arms and scream.
"TAH NA! LET'S GO!"
"MAGPAPAALAM LANG AKO KINA TITA—"
"'WAG NA. I ALREADY TOLD THEM WE'RE LEAVING. MOM EVEN HELP ME PACK MY THINGS."
"'KAY. SEATBELT, PLEASE?"
I hook my strap and smile prettily at you, the kind of pretty you would want to take a hundred selfies with and post in one go on your Facebook.
"DON'T SMILE LIKE THAT," you say.
"WHY NOT?"
"'CAUSE I CAN'T HEAR PARAMORE'S SONG."
I give you a duh look.
