I let myself in when I got to Calum’s house; whenever his parents weren’t home he had a habit of leaving all the doors unlocked. It wasn’t too hard to figure out that he and Mikey were in his room, all I had to do was follow the shouting and the sounds of digital gun fire. Sure enough, Calum was sprawled out on his bed watching while Mikey sat on the floor playing Call Of Duty.

“Wow, I thought you were kidding when you said you’d be here in twenty minutes.” Calum said, drawing my eyes away from the screen.

“I told you I was pissed.” I replied, resisting the urge to roll my eyes at him. “You know me, you shouldn’t have been surprised.”

I dumped my bag somewhere out of the way and then I went and sat down next to Mikey, snatching the controller out of his hands as I did so. He didn’t even protest, it was as if he’d expected me to do it. He just dropped his head down onto my shoulder and continued to watch as I made his character run around on the screen.

“Rae, let Mike play his game; come sit up here with me.” Calum whined from behind me on the bed as I shot a guy about twenty times. “Actually, you know what, stay down there. He can deal with your psychopathic tendencies.”

Mikey rolled his head, his hair tickling my neck in the process, so that he could look up at me. “Don’t worry, I kinda like you’re psychopathic tendencies.”

I could feel his eyes on me as my lips pulled up into a small smile. “Thank you. It’s nice to be appreciated.” I directed the last part at Calum who flicked me in the back of the head.

“What’s up, butter cup?” Mikey asked while Calum leaned over and took the controller from my hands and hitting pause.

With a sigh I ran a hand through my hair, not looking at either of them but rather glaring at the carpet in front of me.

“It’s just my Mum. She was going through my stuff and she found my cigarettes. Then she starting complaining about you guys and said that I needed to be more like Ella and that it was disgusting and I was going to end up killing myself.”

“That doesn’t sound too much different to all your other arguments with her.” Calum pointed out hesitantly, worried that I was going to snap at him.

“She doesn’t usually finish off her little temper tantrums by telling me that she’s going to call the cops on me.” Just saying it out loud made me angry all over again. What kind of parent would turn their own child into the police?

“That’s pretty shit, I can see why you wanted to get out tonight.” Mikey pointed out before pulling a smoke out of his jacket and lighting it.

I laughed at the irony when he offered it to me and took it anyway.

A few hours later and we were just waiting on Ashton so we could leave.

Cal, Mikey and I had played video games for a little while before getting something to eat and then eventually getting ready. I’d had to ignore the two of them gawking at me as I did my make-up; they were both so engrossed and seemed to find it completely fascinating. I managed to convince Mikey to let me put some eye liner on him which actually made him look totally bad ass. I almost got to Calum as well but Luke and Liss had shown up and he’d disappeared.

As soon as Liss had walked in I’d wanted to crawl into a hole; while I was dressed in skinny jeans and a tank top she looked absolutely gorgeous in a floral dress. Sometimes I thought that she dressed the way that she did just to further point out how dissimilar we were.

“Shit, I’m sorry I’m late.” Ashton apologised, running through the door. “I had to convince my parents that I was going to study at Rae’s.”
