Traveling on the Hogwarts Express might have been my favorite part of going to Hogwarts. The dark red train puffed smoke onto Platform Nine and Three Quarters, leaving me squinting to find my friends. To be fair, I was probably the first one to arrive, so searching for them was pointless, but it gave me something to do other than dwell on my parent's absence.

Every year, it was a lottery draw on who got the day off at the Ministry, and this year both my parents got the short end of the stick. They'd barely had time to drop me off early before rushing to the Ministry, trailing excuses behind them.

It hurt more than I thought it would, but I tried my best to not let it bother me. I mean, I was sixteen! Why should I care about whether or not my parents were here to see me off to Hogwarts?

I quickly boarded the Hogwarts Express and roamed the interior. Hopefully, I would secure a compartment for my group without too much effort. Sitting in the community compartments, or even worse, with a group of first years, would definitely be a damper on the beginning of the year.

"Hey Lily!" I greeted, seeing her wandering around with her Prefect badge gleaming on her robes. The redhead seemed a little disheartened, so I decided to stick around for a couple of minutes. "How are you doing?"

"I'm alright, I guess," She sighed, swiping a piece of auburn hair behind her ears. "This summer was pretty rotten, though. My sister wasn't thrilled to see me, but that's nothing new. How about you?"

I shrugged, trying not to seem too happy. My summer had been great, but I didn't want to rub it into Lily's face. I was pretty sure Severus Snape had bothered her all summer about their fight before the last school year had ended, which was a pretty trash move but totally within his character.

"It was pretty average, although Carri's been dangling some piece of information over my head for the past couple of weeks. I'm convinced it's just a scheme of some sorts against our classmates." I replied, rolling my eyes. Lily laughed and waved me on.

"Don't let me keep you. And Glinda?" Lily stopped me before I went too far, her hand resting on my upper arm.

"Yeah?"

"Just promise me I won't have to get anyone in trouble from Carri's scheme."

I winked. "No promises, Prefect, but I'll certainly try my best!" Lily sighed, accepting her defeat, but I caught the sparkle of mischief in her green eyes.

Smiling to myself, I continued my search. Everyone loved hearing about Carri's schemes. Only a couple of minutes later, I found Carri in the middle of her own search. "Hey!" She giggled and pulled me into a tight hug. "Here I was thinking you already got a compartment for us."

"Lily looked glum, so I checked in on her for a couple of minutes," I explained, and Carri wrinkled her nose.

"I hate to say it's her fault, but..."

I nodded my agreement and slipped into the next empty compartment. Carri followed me, and we settled opposite of each other on the cushy compartment seats. I swung my legs up into her lap and pulled my messenger bag over my head into the seat next to me. "Severus should've taken the hint ages ago, and she should have made it pretty clear."

"Well, Mary was just telling me this summer about this big fight they had in front of the Gryffindor Common Room. Apparently, he was camping out there to try and apologize!"

"What a creep."

"I don't know, it's kind of romantic..."

I rolled my eyes at Carri. "Maybe if it was just a little squabble...even then, that's just plain creepy! I sure wouldn't want Snape camping outside my Common Room. I mean, could you imagine?"
