chapter 2 : Could it be true(Alice's pov)
It's been 4 years since Nessie and Jake got married, it was tough on Edward at first, what with reading their mind and all, but we found a solution. We installed them in a house a short way away from us, kind of like we did for Edward and Bella, except this time it was not only a gift for them, it was also a way for Edward to keep his sanity. That way they could go wild every night without being heard in any way, and during the day they were sensible enough not to think about it in details.
In the 12 years that Nessie has been a part of our lives, I've managed to get attuned to her with my sixth sense, it's far from perfect, I can't really see her future, but she doesn't keep me from seeing anybody else's. She appears as some sort of blur in my visions. That's why when the future became black I knew something was up. I could still track the Volturi's decisions, the weather, or the fluctuations in the market, but anything to do with my family was a big black hole. Something very similar to that had happened 12 years ago, so I had a fairly good idea of what was happening, but who knows, the absence of a vision is a lot more difficult to interpret than an actual vision. So the first thing that I did was calling Bella.
”Hey Bella, can you shield everybody from Edward and not ask questions?”
”Why, what's the problem this time?”
”No, no problem just a surprise, and the surprise is for everyone so I can't tell you. But trust me, you're going to love it, I've seen it.”
”alright, you got it, let me know when it's no longer necessary”
Actually I hadn't seen anything but I wasn't going to tell her that. So for the next step, I had to go see Ness, preferably away from Jake.
”Hi Nessie, Hi Jake.”
”Hi Alice, what's up?”
”Sorry Jake, but I need to steal your wife away. It's been too long since we've been shopping together and I just can't stand it anymore.”
”Alice it's been a week, seriously you need help.”Was Jacob's oh so masculine answer.
”That's exactly what I said, I need Nessie's help. And guess what, there's a sale in town.”
”I think I have to go honey, you know she won't give up.”
”Yeah, actually I think you may need as much help as she does, she's just the perfect excuse. But go, I need a nap after last night.”
After we got in my Porsche and drove far enough away to be out of earshot from the houses I said
”Okay, so how long have you been trying to get pregnant?”
”What? I thought you couldn't see my future.”
”Don't dodge the question.”
”A couple of weeks, but, how do you know?”
”Well I can't see your future, but these past years you were interfering a little less with the rest of my visions. But last night, the future of the family became a mystery to me.”
” Well, we did really put our hearts into it last night, but are you sure? I mean, I wouldn't want to give Jake false hopes.”
”Why do you think I took you away from the house, of course I'm not sure. This freaking black hole could be caused by many things. Have you tried pregnancy tests yet?”
”yes, and believe me it doesn't work. It said I should have had either a blue minus or a pink plus. All I got was a purple division sign. Any idea as to how we could find out. Oh crap, daddy is going to know we have doubts, I don't want him to know until we're sure.”
”Don't worry, your mom is shielding every one, she doesn't know why, I told her it was for a surprise. And I think we should go to the hospital, maybe Carlisle will know what to do.”
”OK, but what about the shopping, Jake is going to ask questions if I come home empty handed.”
”Have you seen the size of my trunk? We'll say we had it delivered, and hopefully by the time it doesn't get delivered, we'll know.”
It took us about 20 minutes to get to the hospital and 2 to get through the admission desk.
”Hello girls, to what do I owe this pleasure? nothing wrong I hope.”
I had to step in there, because Nessie was hyperventilating. you have no idea how glad I am not to be prey to that kind of inconvenience when I'm overexcited, poor Nessie, anyway.
”No, we don't think so at least, but we do need you to confirm a theory, and keep silent about it until we're sure.”
”of course, what's the theory?” he asked, his face lit up. it always amazes me how after 300 years he still manages to get excited whenever a little mystery appears.
That's when Nessie decided to get herself together and say ”we think I'm pregnant, but I want to be absolutely certain before I tell anyone.”
Now, if he looked excited before, he simply looked overjoyed ”That's great, a new addition to the family. But why is it only a theory?”
Letting my frustration come to the surface I said ”I'm blind, and apparently there is no standardized test that works with the physiology of a half vampire” with a little smile coming at the end. ”do you think you can find a way to verify? because I went blind a few hours ago, but if it's not that, I need to find what it is.”
”Well we know from Bella's pregnancy that ultrasound won't work on your skin Renesmee, I'm not even trying X-ray or MRI the baby might react to it. We could try to use an endoscope, but it will be uncomfortable for you and to be honest it's not a procedure that I'm thrilled to perform on my granddaughter.” And from the look on his face he really wasn't thrilled, well I can't say I don't understand, I know I wouldn't be.
”Wait do you mean you want to insert a tube with a camera in my uterus via my...” Nessie said, obviously not liking this either.
”Unfortunately yes, well actually no, I don't really want to do it, but I don't see any other way”
”If it's the only way, I suppose. But isn't it a bit early to get it on a camera? I know I got big enough to bring morning sickness in a matter of days, but for all we know my baby, if I do have one, will stay in there for 2 years.” obviously she didn't want to have to do it several times, but we needed to make sure as fast as possible. Thank god for technology.
”The camera we use with the endoscope has a really powerful optic, we can see down to a few cells. Alice went blind a few hours ago, so if there is someone in there, there has to be enough cells for me to confirm it. I won't be able to tell you anything more than you're pregnant or you're not. Well no, that's not actually correct, I might be able to tell you the species, you know vampire, human, shapeshifter, a little bit of the three. who knows what it might be.”
Some people, if you want to make them happy, you take them to Disneyland, or you buy them jewelry. Carlisle, you bring him a scientific enigma and he will be the happiest man on earth.
