chapter 18 : No good deed goes unpunished (Jasper's pov)

It had been a little less than a week since we had met that Fred character, Nessie, Jake and their amazing kids were sleeping. Alice and I were were spending some quality time in the woods, keeping watch on 32 people had taken its toll on my beautiful better half, and she was actually moody. I never thought the day would come when she wouldn't be at a 110% all the time, but sadly it had, and it was painful to watch. So we were relaxing in the woods, looking at the stars, when she suddenly went stiff. 'Well it would appear that Fred made good time.'

”Alice, what did you see?”

”Edward was right. We have to go home, tell the others. We need to act now.”

We were already running, but she still hadn't told me what it was. ”What's happened Alice? talk to me.”

”He left the decision to some underlings, and they're not coming after us, at least not yet.”

”Then why the urgency?” By this time we had made it to the house, and obviously they had heard us coming because they were waiting in the living room.

”So? what's happening? How long until the final showdown?” Sometimes, Emmet is so eager for some action, it's hard to tell if he appreciates the gravity of the situation.

”Sorry Em, but so far no showdown in sight. Ed was right, they are being sneaky. The decision has been delegated to one of the most unimportant members of the guard. And it looks like they are going after our allies of 27 years ago. Well, all I can say for sure, is that this Santiago is sending Demetri, Felix, and the twins after the Egyptians. We have to call them and have them get on the first plane to the American continent. There is no time for us to meet them in Egypt, Italy is way to close.”

”And where would that get them?” Carlisle wondered.

”Never mind that right now. Call them, we'll discuss the details afterward. Wait, tell them that some of us will meet them at the airport where they land.”

While Carlisle had gone with Esmee to make his phone call, the rest of us started planning.

”Well obviously I should be part of the welcoming committee. I mean, if they're followed they're gonna need protection against Alec and Jane.” Bella started.

”I should go too, we need to know exactly why they're after them. Even though I have to admit it seems a bit obvious.” Edward added obviously trying to find an excuse to not leave Bella. I'm telling you, the man has issues. But for once, he probably had a point, his mind reading could probably come in handy.

I then joined in the conversation ”I want to go too. I've trusted the Volturi for the better part of my life. Their behavior 27 years ago, although despicable, could in a twisted way be justified by the law. But to come after our former allies just because they think they might stand with us again is just wrong. Plus, if it comes to a fight, I'm sure I can be of some use.”

”Alright then, Bella you need to start shielding us before you leave. And don't drop your shield under any circumstances, unless I tell you otherwise. Demetri cannot know you are joining Benjamin at the airport. Well I see no reason to wait, we should go as soon as we're ready.”

”You mean you're coming too?” I asked, worry and happiness mixed in my voice.

”Like I was going to stay. I'll be more useful with you, I'll be able to update you in the evolution of the situation in real time, plus I can handle myself in a fight if necessary. And if you think I was gonna let you go without me while Edward talked his way into staying close to Bella, you are greatly mistaken.”
