chapter 6 : An eventful first day (Renesmee's pov)
I remember my parents telling me how it was when I was little, but seeing it with my own eyes is something else. Put a couple of babies in a vampire household and, well in most cases they would probably not enjoy their stay. But we're hardly a regular vampire household. The thing is that, not counting my mom, the youngest of them is close to a hundred years old. And even though they had all learned to live with the fact that they were never going to have kids, they most definitely had not come to terms with the huge loss that it represented to them. The consequence of that, is that my kids are receiving so much love, one might wonder if it's too much, I'm not worried though, they look happy.
”Hey what are you thinking about beautiful?”
”Not much, I'm just floating in an ocean of happiness, I mean look at our kids, aren't they amazing.”
”Yes they are, but how could they not be, have you looked at their parents? But seriously they are something, I'll be honest with you though, the thing that amazes me the most is that even though they're playing together Michael hasn't tried to bite his sister even once.”
'What a buzz-kill' ”Seriously, you have two beautiful babies, looking happy and healthy, surrounded by people who love them, and that's your comment!”
”Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy about everything you just said. What you have to understand though, is that according to the quileute legends, a vampire bite is deadly to a werewolf, so of course I'm glad my son doesn't kill his sister by accident. But that's not even what I meant, you bit me all the time when you were their age, and he hasn't even tried once. I'm not saying he went for it and she fought him away, I'm saying he didn't try. It shows amazing restraint on his part and I'm proud of him. Did someone explain to him that he shouldn't bite while we were asleep?”
It seems my dad had already thought about it, because he had an answer ready ”No we haven't yet, I figured that they needed at the very least a day to understand what we say, it did take Nessie a whole week to start speaking. But I've been observing their thoughts to be able to react if he was going to try to bite, and I noticed something interesting. I think they communicate telepathically, every time Michael got thirsty I saw what I think was a mental discussion. Michael thinking about biting, and almost immediately Olivia having a very clear thought of ... disagreement I guess you could say. One thing I'm sure of, is that it was clearly a negative response to something. Now I can't say I'm sure, I guess we will have to wait until they can speak to ask them, but it had a very similar feeling to what I saw in the pack mind.”
A sure way to get my Jake's interest is to talk about werewolves. The man loves being a werewolf almost as much as he loves me, and he did imprint on me, so that's saying a lot. But to actually suggest that his newborn kids may already be forming a pack of their own is just more happiness than he can take. He fell off of his couch face first, which pleased Rosalie to no end and sent Emmet laughing, and looked at dad ”Are you serious, they're already forming their own pack! Man I can't wait to introduce them to my brothers. But wait, how is it possible? the pack mind is only there when we're in wolf form, and unless my sight is failing me, they're not.”
”Well obviously, they are not your regular shapeshifters. Like you said earlier have you looked at their parents? Or more precisely at their mother. No offense to you Jacob, but as amazing as you may be on the battle field, biologically speaking you are still a regular shapeshifter. Whereas my beautiful daughter ... let's just say there is nothing remotely regular about her. I can't wait to see how your kids will turn out.” He said with a look of utter amazement and admiration on his face. My dad is proud of me, and I know I'm going to be very proud of my kids. Then he got serious, just like he does when he's had an idea. ”Bella love, can you come here a minute, I'd like to try something.
”Sure what is it honey?”
”Extend your shield to one of your grandkids, either one is fine” He asked her with excitement in his voice.
Of course, being in a house of vampires everyone heard, and in the next second they were all in the room an expectant look on their faces. Personally I was puzzled ”Can someone tell me what's going on? I mean if mom shields one of them, of course you won't hear his or her thoughts, but that's hardly cause for excitement.”
My mom looked at me with a puzzled look, obviously thinking that I should know something that I clearly did not. Suddenly understanding dawned on her face and she said ”Of course you wouldn't know, it's not like we talk about these things very often. Actually I don't think we've ever talked about this except during our little 'debriefing' after the averted battle with the Volturi, and you were asleep half the time. You see the thing is, when I extend my shield to the alpha wolf in a pack, the entire pack is shielded. So I guess your father wants to determine which one of them is the alpha. I don't see that it has any importance but, why not.”
”Actually I had not even thought of the alpha part, I was just curious to determine whether or not my first impression was right and they are actually forming a pack. But you're right, it only works with the alpha so maybe you should try it on both of them, separately.”
A few seconds passed, and then mom and dad stared at each other a look of bewilderment on their faces. ”Do you mind sharing with the class?” Emmet asked.
”Well, it seems they are forming a pack.” Mom said, sounding somewhat unsure.
”But there is no alpha, or they're both alphas, I don't really know how to put it. I don't know which one you shielded first, but I couldn't hear any of them.”
”Yeah, I figured as much, I could feel both their sparks. But then I moved it a little so it would cover Michael instead of Olivia, and I could still feel them both.”
”Man, my kids are cool!” was all my Jake could say, and honestly I couldn't have done better.
During the afternoon, Rosalie was playing with barbie dolls with Olivia, and Alice was playing pica-boo with Michael. They were both enjoying themselves very much, Michael was looking at Alice with a big smile on his face when Dad suddenly turned his face toward Alice and Jasper on the couch, then toward Michael.
”What is it Dad? what's wrong? He looks fine, hell he looks like he's having a blast.” I said slightly worried, dad always knows more than everybody else, so I tend to trust him. But seriously what could be wrong?
”Nothing's wrong sweetie, something definitely happened, but I wouldn't say it qualifies as wrong.”
”Then what is it Ed?” Emmet asked clearly irritated ”Honestly man, you have to stop with the suspense. You know you actually need to say something for us to understand what's happening.”
”I think Michael just used his reading power. I couldn't say exactly what it is, it's definitely different from mine, but that's about all I can conclude. OK, so here's what happened : when you where playing with him, he was indeed having a blast as my daughter pointed out. And from what I could see in his mind it seemed like he wanted to thank you for being so much fun. And then you thought about the first time you met Jasper in that bar, but he had the exact same images in his head.”
”Wait I just thought of that day too, I couldn't say why, but I did.” Jasper interrupted with a look of surprise on his face.
”I know, your thought started like half a second after Alice's. But Michael only saw it the way Alice saw it. So, honestly I don't know what to make of that. But it seems cool”
”Cool? Are you kidding me, it's awesome. Maybe he can see anything from our past, what a better way to pick up dirt on people? No, wait a minute, that kid is never going to respect me if he can find out anything about my past, he's going to see how I got my ass kicked by a bear.” Apparently Emmet still wasn't over that. He still took his revenge every time there was a bear around when we went hunting.
