chapter 17 : Payback is a bitch (Fred'pov)

28 years I had been a vampire, you would think that at some point someone might have mentioned a freaking vampire law enforcement organization. Granted, Bree said something about it, but it's not like she really had time to elaborate, plus she was supposed to know as little as me, so I didn't put too much stock into it. Now I had to find some of the vampires I met during these 28 years and ask them where I could find these Volturi. I suppose I could have asked that Edward guy, but something told me he would have tried to talk me out of it, so I figured it was easier to ask someone else without telling them why I needed to go there. They wouldn't have understood, what happened that day 28 years ago was wrong, and surely the leaders of this organization would want to know that some of their guards had gone too far. I had right on my side after all.

So after having made the proper inquiries, which took me 5 days, I was in Volterra, stalking in the shadows waiting for the sun to set so I could cross in the open without looking like a disco ball. Also I was studying my surroundings in case something went wrong.

About a half hour after sunset I was walking through the door of the clock tower. A few paces in, I was greeted by a female vampire with mahogany hair. ”Hi, can I help you?”

”I hope so, yes. I would like to request an audience with the Volturi council.”

”Alright then, follow me. I'm Heidi, and you?”

”Fred. I'm sorry, this is all very new to me. I only discovered the Volturi's existence a short while ago, I had no idea that a few dozen vampires could live together peacefully, and in the middle of a city even. This is amazing.”

”Well it's not without a few difficulties, but being part of the Volturi guard is such an honor, it's worth a few sacrifices. OK, it's behind this door, wait for me here, I'll go see if they are available.”

While I was waiting, I took in my surroundings. It was quite impressive, there was a sensation of power coming from this walls. It was the kind of place you would expect a king would have lived in, a thousand years ago. Yeah, power and age, it was like I had stepped in a time machine. After a couple of minutes she came back and invited me in. Let me tell you, if the anteroom emanated of power, this one was a freaking supernova. It was not overly luxurious by any mean, it was a big round room, and every single details in it were designed so that the focus of anyone entering would be drawn to 3 throne-like chairs in which were seated three of the most peculiar vampires you could think of. They were clearly vampires, there was no mistaking their flawless beauty, but their skin seemed almost transparent, and their eyes, though red, appeared to be covered with a misty film. But they were without the shadow of a doubt, the 3 members of the council.

Everything about what was in front of me screamed that if I wanted to leave this room in one piece I should watch what I said to them with great care. Well, the probability of running into another group of vampires immune to my invisibility seemed slim, so at least there was that. As I walked inside the room, I realized that behind the three figures of authority there was a sickly looking vampire female. I never would have thought before that a vampire could look sickly, but trust me this one did. Then, in front of them, slightly to the right was a little blond girl who couldn't have been more than 15 when she was turned. And behind me on either side of the door, were two males, one tall and bulky, the other one could easily have been the twin of the little girl, he was rather short with dark hair. Wait, twins! Well that's an unfortunate start, the two persons that I've come to accuse appear to be practically the only ones in the room beside the actual council. It would seem that we can't have everything we want in life, I suppose it wouldn't be fun. Still, making my case in front of the accused was going to be seriously uncool, but I kept telling myself 'I have right on my side'.
